Another season closed on a very low note! What are the needed changes for UVA to return to Elite status?
Too soon⦠If we are honest, the program has to figure an approach to return to respected status before it can focus on being Elite. Someone close this thread as I think we all need some time on this.
Paying 5 stars millions and making sure they donāt leave. Idea of student athlete is long gone
Step 1 which we can control now is retain Eli and iMac, & develop Bliss and A Rob in the offseason. Everything and everyone else should have a question mark attached (sans Bennett, sans new class).
If we retain and increase the role of Eli, of iMac, Buchanan improves, and A Rob and Bliss were legit recruiting wins, with a few power 5 quality transfers, Iām not pessimistic about next year being an improvement over this one.
A lot of what ifs, but not feeling FUBAR
Oh boy here we go.

You know that āEuropean offenseā that Elmarko Jackson talked about. Um, yeah, do that.

Change up the offensive philosophy. try to instill some confidence in these guys. Tell them to play free. Live with more mistakes trying to make things happen.
3A)Use the NIL funds to go hard in the portal. As much as Iād love to run back these guys and hope that theyāre better, it just wonāt happen next year. I think you kindly nudge Rohde and Harris out.
3B) 1-3- You pursue a grad transfer PG shooting north of 35% from 3 on high volume. Bliss as the backup. You have Mckneely and Gertrude as the 2ās. A 2 year transfer wing with length and can also shoot 35% from 3 on high volume. Murray is his back up. Both of these transfers need to be able to get to the rack too. Sharma redshirts.
3C- 4-5- You try to get Dunn back for one more year. Bond as his backup. Cofie redshirts. If Dunn leaves, go get a guy like Maliq Brown. At the 5, Eric Dixon. Nuff said. Buchanan as a 10 minute a game backup. Work on development one more year with A-Rob before heās in the rotation.
- Make some sort of change on the staff. Get someone who can bring a new offensive scheme or recruiting prowess. Start holding assistants accountable for doing a poor job recruiting. Not to be rude, but J Willy is frankly not a good recruiter tbh. At least from what I can tell.
I dunno, maybe call one of the coaches in Storrs, CT and ask a few questions about the offense? I get that Hurley and company arenāt just going to give stuff away, but there is a relationship between the two programs (based on having secret scrimmages the last two years).
I donāt think we need to go overboard.
There is a wide gap of talent between 5 star high end and what we have been getting/settling for. I long for just average dudes as @WFS_HOO would say (in the context of basketball) and then after 1-2 years of solid success throw in the pitch to high end guys.

(Also want to say I in no way intend to mock or downplay mental health struggles. Definitely something Im familiar with, having taken a year away from college after 2nd year due to mental health. And that itās hard if you are struggling but havenāt opened up about it due to the stigma and fear of others looking at you differently. And itās hard when your mental health impacts your day to day life without the means or support to appropriately address it.
That being said⦠I mean we all saw what happened last night L.O.L)
I think something actionable for the staff would be to reevaluate how they are defining āa good shot.ā Based on what shots are taken, I worry that the definition is too loose in some ways (e.g. midranges taken willingly at the first hint of daylight) and too tight in other ways (e.g. not taking a semi-open three if it presents early in the shot clock). Regardless of what actions are being run, I think thereās opportunity to improve player decision-making on what they shoot and what they pass up in order to find something better.
I only skimmed the story, but the analytics consulting mention brought that up for me.
Last night I watched Rohde and Harris shooting 19-foot jump shots with time left on the shot clock. I wouldnāt call those āgood shots.ā
Itās all fun n games until you come to work and Wagner dudes from Staten Island are dunking on you cause their program is better this year
Really good article from 247ās Isaac Trotter.
While the sting of UMBC will be there forever, in some ways this morning was worse.
The 2018 team was elite all year. They won the ACC regular season & tournament. We ran into a flukey situation on one weird night, and thatās the beauty/tragedy of March Madness. But we knew weād be right back contending next season.
Last night was just the culmination of everything wrong about this year. We didnāt have a key player hurt. We didnāt get screwed with seeding. We played arguably our worst game when it needed to be our best, and did it in a way that highlighted shortfalls weāve had all year. And we donāt have our best player returning. Weāll likely have to rely on unproven kids and guys who arenāt even on the roster yet. Thatās scaryā¦program truly is at a crossroads.
