Fair enough. That takes some pressure off.
I almost feel bad in believing that we can do better than Morris, because heās obviously been really solid for us and is a warrior for fighting through his injuries. But I do think thereās gonna be guys out there in the portal now available to us who are more talented than him and could raise the ceiling of our offense.
If he does get a waiver Iād assume we just ride with him for another year, and I wouldnāt really blame our staff for doing so after the season we just had. But part of me would wonder who we could have gotten on the open market.
I think heād look a lot better if we can upgrade our OL again and have some better injury luck. Feel like we have a better chance of doing that than finding a clear upgrade at QB
What would people prefer?
- Replacement for Des who performs 15% better
- Replacement for Morris who performs 15% better

Again all pending the Morris waiver, but this is a guy who I think would make a lot of sense for us. Would be below Becht or other proven P5 starters if theyāre real possibilities but Minchey is super talented.
Almost beat out Carr who is a complete stud. Would work for me!
Heās going to want Mensah money? What did we pay Morris?
I think a little over a mil. Several articles mentioned he had multiple 1+ mil offers and he chose us. If it was significantly more than a mil, I think that wouldāve come out at some point. Taylor made 400k and RB is purportedly one of the lower paid positions. College pay scale per position is fairly akin to the NFL positional pay.
Iād take a serious hard look at him. Heās got a high floor high ceiling and Iād like to see what he could do.
Iād be okay with Morris back for another year, but Iām not overly excited about it. I think after 7 years we can all say heās a bit injury prone. Not saying Morris is not a warrior and a helluva leader, but he gets banged up and making him a pure drop back passing to avoid hits limits what he can do.
Thereās enough talent available and the Hoos have enough resources that Iām okay going fishing again.
Thanks Jazz. Iāve been trying to drop a position group a day or so. LBs are cued up for tomorrow and Iāll work up DBs (and I guess special teams?) for later in the week. Will post them both here and in the wiki.
Reject the idea any replacement for Des could only be 15% better
Speros just followed Rocco Becht lol. Weāre not going to get him but that probably means weāre going to aim high.
Also followed the VT RB.
Relevant in that we play them next year

Who would you want to hire then? I just think there would be a very big risk of bringing someone new. Iād wager 15% worse is just as likely as 15% better.
How do we get JMUās RB and DE, Knight and West. Those dudes can play. Becht would be a very good get for us. The ND backup would be cool I think heās got a fairly high ceiling but Iād like to find someone more proven.
I would think on the QB/RB front taking care of our in-house OL first and having that potential depth chart to show would be the most important first step. Check out the great job @StLouHoo is doing mapping out each position group, but the OL has a chance to be special if we can get buy in and return agreements from everyone eligible to come backā¦
Notre Dame QB adds some medium term excitement though. Iām fine with a lot of one year rentals but itād be nice to build to something at some positions if possible
I was just being glib butā¦
Brennan Marion (before Colorado hired him), Joe Moorhead, Jerry Neuheisel, Chip Kelly (would think heās headed back to OSU), Garrett Riley, Warren Ruggerio
But honestly probably a lot of position coaches whose names I donāt know that I would prefer to Des.
This was a talented offensive team that still isnāt going to finish in the top 50 in most models offensively. We can do better and itās silly to pretend we canāt and should just settle for mediocrity.
This is a guy Iām keeping an eye on. Elliott wouldnāt hire him because he doesnāt run Elliottās preferred offense, but he sounds like a bright guy with a mind for a creative offense.
The reality is:
-
Des will not be forced out anytime soon. If he leaves, it would be on his own accord to join another staff or back to the NFL (I donāt think thatās an impossibility, by the way, though probably less likely now).
-
if Des was gone, I strongly think we would hire someone in Tonyās network. Doesnāt mean someone heās coached with (he never coached with Des), but I doubt it would be someone random.
Iāve brought him up a ton already, but if we were to make a move thereās a good chance Gordon Sammis is gonna be available with Mora leaving for Colorado State. In my opinion at least heād be an upgrade over Des.
