I thought all the analysts were former basketball players or coaches? Have they now lowered the bar to ādidnāt play, didnāt coach, and doesnāt know shit about basketballā?
Is UNC gonna throw this game
Wake seems to want to not win with a few turnovers.
Wake has had some brutal losses.
lost to Michigan and Texas Tech by 1 point
With all due respect, how do you āruinā Pitt?
That program has been a dumpster fire since Nasir Robinson fouled Butlerās Matt Howard 88 feet from the basket with 1.4 seconds in the round of 32 fifteen years ago. Jeff Capel is the Marvin Lewis of college basketball when it comes to keeping a job.
Agree that Pitt has no PG play, but Jaland Lowe is terrible. I swear the kid thinks heās paid NIL money by the dribble. Terrible ball movement, horrible shot selection, just a really selfish player that has really regressed since his freshman year at Pitt. And I was really impressed with Lowe his freshman year at Pitt.
I guess I should cut him some slack because I know heās battling an ongoing shoulder injury this year. That said, as soon as the ball hit his hands in that final play versus Mizzou, anyone that has watched Lowe play any length of time had to sense that regardless of what was called in the time-out, Jaland was going to drive left and let it fly.
Looking at potential coach turnover this yearā¦
Definitely Fired:
- Capel - heās hired through 2030, but got to believe this is end of the road. Resources are slim but status quo is unacceptable.
- Grant - BC has regressed since his extension in 2023. His contract runs through 2029 but donāt see a light at the end of the tunnel. Program may be dead though.
- Forbes - barring a turnaround, theyāll miss the tourney for a 6th straight season under Forbes. They potentially have resources so could bounce back.
Could move on:
- Stoudamire - GT showed progress last year, but are favored in only 2 more ACC games through the rest of the season. I think he stays to get one more shot, but things could get ugly - especially after a poor non-con - where GT decides to pull the plug.
- Shrewsbury - has showed progress but results still not great. That loss to IUP and chasing an official Iām sure doesnāt endear him. With Burton out and a respectable finish, heās most likely safe for a final prove it year..
- Autry - expectations are higher than others in this list and this ends up being dependent on Cuseās ability to sneak into the tourney. Heās got BC, Pitt, GT, and FSU in his first 5 ACC games so this picture may not get clearer until February. Iād put money though that heās gone next year.
Attrition through hire or retire:
- Young - rumors of retirement. Next yearās roster may not be a total rebuild depending on transfers but heāll lose a couple of stars. Is he ready to hang it up? His contract is up in 2027. Would put odds on retirement.
- Brownell - he was a candidate for Indiana and has had a nice run. Hard to think that the coaching carousel will be as active as last year but if it spins just right, maybe he gets a pay bump and a chance to cap his career at an upper level P4 program.
For the ACCās sake, I think Cuse and Wake need to nail the next hire. Weird to say it but I hope (and expect) that Clemson retains Brownell - the ACCās longest tenured active head coach?
Ah, I didnāt realize they did that. Weird timing given that his 2nd year that earned that extension was still below .500.
This is gonna be an interesting call. So far itās been his best season at Cuse and not far off of late-era Boeheim. Not sure what expectations should be there. If you filter on T-Rank starting when they entered the ACC (T-Rank - Customizable College Basketball Tempo Free Stats - T-Rank), they are #45 overall (weāre #8) and #6 in the ACC (T-Rank - Customizable College Basketball Tempo Free Stats - T-Rank).
How does Capel have a contract until 2030? I vaguely remember him getting an extension at one point was it a 10 year deal? Whoās he have dirt on?
Stoudamire and GT rumors are flying down here. Thereās a lot of disappointment regarding how the season is playing out. Thereās also a new AD in town and he was not the one who brought Stoudamire in. Toss in lagging ticket sales, could see GT moving on come March.
I think the problem with Red is that he is an extension of those years of mediocre results under Boeheim. If he was net-new to the program, then I think heād have some more leniency.
2020 extension to 2026-27 (why 14-19 followed by 16-17 merits an extension is beyond me) and then a 2024 extension on-top of that. At least the 2024 extension was after their best season, so thereās some logic behind it.
For some reason they added on two years to his original 5 year deal midseason in 2020. He rewarded them by going 3-12 the rest of the way. He wasnāt good in his first two seasons either. Was bad in 2020-2021 and 2022-23. Those years also included two separate felonies by his players.
He was ACC Coach of the year in 2022-2023. And then they ended 2024 on a hot streak but ultimately think they were one of the First Four out. They added 3 years after that effort to push the deal to 2030.
Was bad last year and so far this year. If they somehow give him another year, I have no doubt he will produce and theyāll end up extending him again haha
I thought GT wasnāt investing much into MBB anymore. Theyāre putting what they have into football and it still might not be enough. I donāt think they want to pay Stoudamire to not coach. Theyāve done enough of that with basketball coaches.
My first bracket. I have UVA as a 4 seed, and 9 ACC teams in.
Iām not sure the new AD is pushing things in a different direction for sure. I used to be tight with some people in the Blattās office when he was there. He made the last round of hires for football and was responsible for Stoudamire which was a big deal for them. I donāt think they are fully abounding basketball, thereās a strong tradition for here and the alumni are proud.
Do they have the money do fully go all in on basketball from a facilities standpoint? I donāt know. The athletic budget is being stretched, renovations to Bobby Dodd just happened last year and they are in the midst of another major fundraiser. Stoudamireās buyout should be managable.
Thanks for sharing! Looking at WAB (NCAA Statistics) and efficiency ratings, I see the following tiers of NCAAT chances:
Tier 1: Thinking more about seeding than selection
- Duke: +5.2 WAB separates them from everyone else, though their efficiency ratings arenāt really ahead of the pack
Tier 2: Resume in good shape and they should be good enough to take care of remaining business (WAB>1)
- Clemson, UNC, UVA, SMU, Louisville, Miami
Tier 3: Bad WAB (<1) but should be good enough to improve the resume by end of season
- NC State
Tier 4: Unclear if they are good enough to improve the resume, but are alive still (WAB between -1 and +1)
- VT, Stanford, Cal, Cuse, Wake, Notre Dame
Tier 5: Try again next season (WAB underwater and they are bad)
- FSU, GT, Pitt, BC
WOW WHAT A LAST MINUTE FROM STANFORD. Tough scene UNC
Boopie half court for the win!!
Lmao good thing Tech won their Super Bowl
Insane shot. Insane!
This has to be so demoralizing for Tech. ![]()
