Kinda crazy to imagine. He was the original guy that proved you could flip a team in one year in the portal era. 61st → 3 seed in his first season. That being said it had been rough the past two years, and they’ve been spending like crazy. Certainly a warning sign to schools signing coaches to big extensions after one year, but people forget he was originally tied to the Arkansas job before Calipari.
For what it’s worth three man weave said the buyout only drops to 12 million next year, so ‘only’ a 6 million opportunity cost

If I’m a coach and seeing this, why would I want to go to Kansas State without the most air tight guarantees or just a ton of money up front now?
Getting fired for calling out your team and saying it’s not going the way it should is a huge major loser program red flag.

Well I think he’s getting fired for putting together very disappointing teams for the last several seasons. The “for cause” part seems a little desperate from the university though, and unlikely to work.

They kinda tried to blackmail him on some off the field stuff there and it didn’t work, he got his money.
This one doesn’t even seem to have the off the field pretext, they’re trying to use his public comments that sound a lot like every will wade press conference to get out of it. I guess they’re just crossing their fingers and hoping it’s enough hassle that he’ll settle.

The “for cause” is for negotiation purposes, and there may be info that we don’t know. If you’re Tang, would you rather “settle” for say $9m, or fight it out in court for the next 2 years with no guaranteed result?
Yeah that is exactly what it is- which means it’s a shakedown unless they have some dirt we don’t know about yet. It’s a shitty look and they’re gonna end up costing themselves more than the buyout id bet

Remember that Kevin Ollie won his arbitration case to get his full buyout from UConn, and then got nearly $4 mil to settle a lawsuit he brought for reputational damages. And he had NCAA violations!
