It looks like Step 2 is where things went sideways.
Next was the transfer portal. The Cougars had the budget to spend on another star after securing Wrightâs commitment â Yaxel Lendeborg and Darrion Williams were among the in-demand transfers BYU was linked to â but opted for depth after consulting Dybantsa and Saunders about the types of players with which they work best.
âWe went to them and were like, âWhat players can we put around you to be successful? Help us think through this,ââ Justin Young said. âThe NBA does it all the time. Talk to your franchise guys, your max contract guys, what works well with you in your mind. ⌠When you have four Tier 1, alpha-male college players, the ball doesnât move around that much.â
BYU was focused on finding floor-spacers, guys who would be happy to take and make open shots with the oppositionâs attention on Dybantsa, Wright and Saunders.
One of their two guys outside their big 3 who was proven at this level gets hurt early and then it turns out the rest of the guys arenât top-25 team role player caliber. Some of this was foreseeable, Pickens and Mrus were secondary options at lower levels. Contrast that with Jacari and Sam, shot-takers at the midmajor level that transitioned into being role players.

Boban was a Spur the same time I lived in San Antonio. Fell in love with that guy as a player. His energy was infectious. One of the easiest guys in the NBA to root for regardless of team affiliation.

Anyone have an idea as to the amount of weight GrĂźnloh has lost since the season began? He seems a bit more fatigued and a bit less assertive than he did in December. Or, so it seems to me. Or, is Mike Curtis supplying him with an hourly regimen of milk shakes?

Yep. I wonder if anyone has ever really done a look at how well teams handle travel. I would imagine the way a team performs while traveling is related directly to how good that team is.
And then hereâs Brad Underwood who doesnât seem to think itâs a big deal. Of course, he can say that, his team is really good.

Does anyone know why Thursday is such a dead zone now? I feel like it didnât use to be this way but maybe Iâm wrong

Actually, there was a time when high schools played their games on Tuesday and Friday nights, and colleges played their games on Wednesday and Saturday nights (and, occasionally on Saturday afternoon). There wasnât a great deal of deviation from that regimen. Then, cable television and ESPN happened. There was also a time when Coaches Gibson and Holland regularly scheduled home & away games with out-of-conference major powers in January & February. Regardless, Thursdays have never been a âbasketballâ night in my experience.

Big-10 does a better job. They have Menâs basketball games everyday of the week except Thursday. I wish the ACC could do that.

Thursday and Sunday for the Women in the ACC and SEC. Simplifies both TV scheduling as well as arena availability.

Yea Iâve heard that. But the Big Ten has two games Sunday, canât we get those teams playing Thursday as a treat.
SameâŚThursday has evolved into a mid major only schedule. Some of it is the conference realignment I think. The Pac 12 used to have Thursday-Sat road trips. And it just seems like the power conferences arenât spreading out their games as much as in the past. There used to be a sprinkling of Big 10 games on Thursday for example. I think this is the first year when itâs been like this.

True I forgot about the PAC-12.
This is a little silly with 40 minute sample size for most teams, but it felt like Duke really struggled in clutch time last year as well.

The funny part was Max Hofmeyerâs reply to Rothsteinâs drivel â suggesting that those West Coast Big 10 teams and the West Coast ACC teams should consider getting together and forming a ânew conferenceâ to limit their travel.
But what would they call it? It should probably having something about âPacificâ in it, since theyâre all on the West Coast.
