Resume metrics should be used to select the at-larges.
Seeding is about getting the competitive balance of the bracket right, and should reflect how good the teams are expected to be.

Texas looked pretty terrible. They SHOULD hang on to finish top 75 but I don’t think it’s a certainty.
That’s fair. In reality I think the committee seeds based on a combination of ratings and resume. It uses resume to correct for outliers (aka Saint Mary’s who has gotten very good at gaming the analytical rankings).
Agreed, and just for emphasis, we’re borderline bad at forcing TOs. Also, our perimeter defense is fine but nowhere near as good as our interior D.
Using the NCAA ranking teams 1-48 that made the big dance and then 49-52 which were the first 4 in order of missing. The best correlator last year was the Torvik ranking, WAB was 2nd. The worst was BPI and last year SOR, although SOR was the best the year before. The one thing I will say is that KPI and BPI seemed to be basically ignored by the committee.
I don’t have anywhere near the detail you’re looking for, but KenPom breaks it out very slightly. According to him, we’re overall ok at not turning the ball over. Not great or anything, but its more a very slight strength than a weakness. However, breaking it down slightly, we’re pretty bad at getting our pockets picked but, contrary to how it probably feels, we’re quite good at avoiding careless “non-Steal” TOs.
For context, we’re about as good (relative to the rest of D1 hoops) at avoiding non-Steal TOs as we are at hitting 3s. Not quite elite, but close. Very very good. However, we’re about as good at avoiding Steal TOs as we are at avoiding fouling. Which is to say “not good at all”. Quite bad, actually.
Jacari is on Field of 68 live right now

Great interview of Jacari. I definitely learned some things about his journey getting to U.Va. What a solid young man. It was also cool to learn that the Jacarmy founders asked his permission to start the group. He said he even has one of their shirts on order (the Jacarmy supply ran out).
I loved watching Jacari as a player this week. Now I love him as a person.
I don’t know if his game would have fit with Tony, but his personality certainly would have.
I’m torn because I’d like to listen to hear Jacari but that would require listening to Goodman and Dauster.
Jacari was already my favorite player on this team, but then his perfect game and 12 straight from deep followed by this seals it. Officially enlisting in the Jacarmy!
I think we need a roll call of those who have joined the Jacarmy.

A few teams have lower NET and better resumes, but UVA is currently 23rd in “Wins Above Bubble” per Torvik so the resume is solid. Also, looking at last year’s field it looks like the top 21 on NET were also the top 21 seeded teams. I think it would take a very odd season for a top 20 NET team in a power conference to fall below a 6 seed.

Loaded class. Does seem a bit odd it took so long to induct Wally Walker

Oof. Jon Rothstein posts about “a new dawn in Charlottesville,” noting how Virginia is averaging 15 ppg more than any Bennett team. Kyle Guy responds with a ring and trophy emojis. ![]()
