🏀 2025-26 Preseason Basketball Thread

Yeah, and those back-to-the-basket post players are a huge mismatch in the college game because bigs are training, like you said, for the pro game to shoot from the outside and run the floor. Since college players can be paid, we see the Bacots, Dickinsons and the like staying a full 4 years. I wish we had Ugo for more than one year because he’s young for his grade and, I think, has not reached his potential.

Same age as TJ Power and Hunter Dickinson when they began college. Nothing at all against those going to college at later years/moreso just context for “He still has potential” for a rising 4th year in Ugo #suetheNCAA (and hope he doesnt bag chase too much next off season)

Data is just like any other tool. You have to know how to use it for it to be effective. Some do; some don’t. I don’t know if it qualifies as an imperfect panacea, but… I imagine that the biggest issue, WRT sports, is recognizing which data is useful and which isn’t because I also suspect that there are folks collecting more data than will ever be helpfu.

Woah thought Jim was the resident Odom fan, but Matt went there.

It is very imperfect with sports however cause dudes have slumps. Dudes dont perform etc

Every sport is an adjustment to the adjustment to the adjustment your opponent is making, right?

The media types really love Will Wade. I think he’s a fine coach and all but to rank him as the best in the ACC at this point is a little silly. He spent five years at LSU and only had 1 top 25 team.

There’s no proven (keyword) elite coaches in the ACC right now. Picking the best coach is so subjective anyway. I’d probably have Kyle Smith at the top.

Agree. But what is Stanford doing? No transfers in, but have some holes to fill.

"As Virginia’s pursuit of international basketball prospect Thijs De Ridder became more and more complicated by eligibility issues, associate head coach Griff Aldrich, De Ridder’s lead recruiter, started to question the wisdom of putting so much time and effort into the recruitment of one player.

Head coach Ryan Odom was adamant the Cavaliers stay the course.

“There were so many times Ryan was like, ‘Let’s just keep chipping away,’” Aldrich told Cville Right Now. “And I was like, ‘Man, do we need to pull the plug? Are we not reading the providential signs.’”

In the end, De Ridder committed to UVA and the NCAA granted him two years of eligibility. Odom praised Aldrich’s efforts in getting the Belgian power forward to Charlottesville. Aldrich credited Odom’s patience in the process.

It’s a prime example of how the two men, best friends for over three decades, believe they will complement each other as they lead Virginia’s program. And it’s why Aldrich gave up a head coaching post at Longwood to join Odom at UVA."

Woah.. that might be the best Odom propaganda I’ve seen all year

Glad to see Odom’s name in there but pretty sad how lack luster the coaching talent is in the ACC right now. Even if you wanted to disagree with these lists, it’s hard to find others worth moving up.

Hubert is a coin toss each season, Forbes and Capel are goats for the first 20 games of a season and then lose it in the last 15. Enfield I’m lukewarm on.

Personally I’ve got Brownell and Scheyer as my top 2, Wade, Odom, and Kelsey are in the grouping right after that for me.

Yeah, that was more or less the takeaway on the podcast. Collectively, ACC coaching is way down and significantly below SEC, Big Ten, etc.

They didn’t seem to take roster building into that much account, hence why Scheyer wasn’t at the top and why Hubert wasn’t higher.

I think his time at McNeese brought the hipsters to his side

Personally I do like Scheyer’s X’s and O’s this past season…helps when you have 5 NBA guys on the floor and more on the bench to do a lot of these actions with but thought their offense this year and defensive strategy was impressive to watch.

Especially compared to Hubert where it feels like they just roll the ball out and see what happens.

I think Scheyer has developed a rep for not having good set plays at THE MOST prominent and memorable moments of his season.

I also think that post draft, there is even more of a realization that he probably had a historically good roster, and he biffed it (because of what I noted above).

So even if overall he’s a good Xs/Os in game, in season coach, it’s a bit swamped.

It’s like an Oceans 11 movie where Clooney puts together the perfect crew, convinces everyone to play their role to perfection, has the perfect plan, and adapts well to the snafus, and has the priceless painting in his grasp, but then suddenly trips on his own two feet and sticks his head through the painting.

What is the story of his roster building at McNeese? Looking at the fact that they got guys with actual recruit ratings, I assumed he was able to activate some funding sources and outtalent the Southland.

And, of course, Moneyball let him assemble a league-average offense for pennies, but that was the easy part. The reason the A’s were good, rather than average-ish, was because they got incredibly lucky with pitchers. Getting Hudson, Mulder and Zito from 3 drafts is ridiculous, and even better they all made it to the majors at about the same time so their contracts were all affordable at the same time.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen the movie, but I do remember someone (maybe Bill Simmons) downgrading it slightly becuase it barely mentions Hudson, Mulder, and Zito as key parts of the A’s success.

Since I’m bringing movies into the preseason thread, is there anyone good at photoshop on here who can replace Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd with Odom and Aldrich in the below photo? Heck, even if you’re bad at photoshop, I’ll still appreciate it.
