Killing me to wait
I don’t know if that’s the right conversion. I mean first of all, he’d get more than a college kid just because he’s in HS and has more leverage. Then he’s not necessarily foregoing his bonus entirely, he’s just delaying it for 3 years. Now, whether he gets the same bonus in 3 years is a bet on himself, could be more, could be less, could be 0. Even if he basically treats this as full insurance on the downside risk of his career not panning out due to injury or performance, that’s still the bonus paid over 3 years. So maybe call it a 3 year contract for 1.2 mil a year and a 300k buyout? Is that still above SEC high roller money? Probably. But closer.
But it’s bonus + contract. And if he’s really sitting 100 mph on his fastball, with movement, he’ll be in the majors at 21 or 22 — which changes even more.
If he does make the majors by 21 or 22, yeah that would change the math some. I’m skeptical on any high school pitchers making the majors in 3-4 years though. From the 2022 draft, no HS pitchers are in the majors and only a couple of hitters. From 2021 it’s only Jackson Jobe (about to get TJ) and Chase Petty, very briefly and Andrew Painter soon (after 2 years out from TJ). 2020 is Jared Jones and Mick Abel (debut 3 weeks ago). Paul Skenes would’ve been a 2020 HS draftee, but was a 2023 college draftee instead and debuted in May 2024, same as Jones.
But the minor league salary isn’t really a factor. It’s like 25-30k a season plus free housing.
macon winslow to unc…….
Any chance Ford returns?
According to Pete Nakos he’s down to Texas, Tennessee, or MSU if he stays the college route.
I still think there’s a very high likelihood he goes pro.
Aiden Stillman has decommitted according to his IG. Was our highest ranked 2025 commit leftover from O’Connor.
Think there’s a chance he makes it to college, so it’s a tough loss.
Watching Vandy on that one.
Pretty sure they’re going hard after Noah Yoder as well.
Good news last week. Mostly bad last day or two.

RHP John Paone flips from Duke to UVA. Ranked 420th on Perfect Game but 128th on MLB.com’s draft prospects list, so he is a draft risk.
That being said though still a very good add.
July 13th can’t come fast enough! Hope Pollard is able to get some of these kids on grounds.
I’m sorry, what is July 13?
MLB draft
MLB.com’s summary on Paone did note that he was considered to be a tough sign.
Was in the portal with a do not contact tag.
Which is Noah? Is there a little bro in UVa baseball’s future?
Well, it would certainly cost the academic side the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition, and thus would reduce resources. It has a minuscule impact on the institutions’ overall budget, however, and would be offset by the advantages to the institutions’ reputation that comes with successful athletic programs.
Right, it reduces revenue on the academic side and decreases expense on the athletic side, which 1) rolls up into the same consolidated accounting group, so a net 0 bottom line impact and 2) can be offset by a reallocation of student fees, decreasing the portion going to athletics and increasing the portion going to academics which would also produce a net 0 consolidated impact and for appearances sake lessens the criticism that the student body is subsidizing sports where some athletes are making millions of dollars.
Edit: maybe we could move this part of the discussion to the athletic department thread.
