The knives continue to be out:

First anecdote is about them passing on Chandler Morris.

This is ending so poorly and I’m enjoying every minute of it. It’s also humorous to me that it feels like members in the media are taking a special delight in digging in on this after all the years of dismissal from Bellchick.

It’s so clear that people frigging HATE Mike Lombardi and have no problem letting others know about it.

Is it good to pay a GM $1.5M/year when this is the level of knowledge he is walking in with?

Two people at the university who interacted with the duo during that time said Belichick and Lombardi needed a crash course on how the college name, image and likeness space worked and revealed that they had no relationships with any players in the portal.

And negotiates like this?

One who took his client on a visit there said Lombardi told him, ā€œWe don’t fall in love (with players)ā€ and, ā€œgave me the sales pitch about why would you say no to Bill Belichick?ā€ Another said Lombardi made a strong initial offer for his client, then lowered it considerably over a subsequent series of calls: ā€œHe made it impossible to get a deal done because at some point, I’m being a bad agent for my client.ā€

Is this good governance?

Belichick was hired, effectively, by two members of UNC’s Board of Trustees: then-chairman John Preyer and Jennifer Lloyd — a potential violation of university bylaws. Multiple sources briefed on the hiring process said their understanding was that, while Cunningham was engaged in his own negotiations, Preyer and Lloyd had already presented Belichick with a preliminary offer to become the Tar Heels’ next head coach — and a lucrative one, skyrocketing UNC into a financial situation the athletic department never intended to reach.

Earlier in the story they say they committed to $59M of spend between staff, players, and other investments, and then the buyout numbers are:

If UNC wanted to move on from Belichick altogether, it would be on the hook for the remaining $20 million it owes him and would also have to buy out Belichick’s staff — the majority of whom are also on multiple-year, guaranteed contracts that include a pay raise in 2026. North Carolina’s public contracts have not been fully updated, but regardless, it would cost at least another $9.25 million to buy out the rest of Belichick’s coaching staff, plus Lombardi.

Ok that’s enough quoting but there’s more in there that’s worth reading.

Some of this stuff reminds me of some of the early criticism of Al Groh. But Groh smartly surrounded himself with coaches with lots of college experience and outstanding recruiters (Golden, London, Rocco, Prince, his son).

Groh had also been a college coach before, spent the 70s bouncing around as a college assistant and six seasons as Wake’s head coach in the 80s before switching over to the NFL for the late 80s and 90s. Yeah he’d been out of college over a decade when he came to UVA, which is admittedly a while, but still wildly different than BB who was a true NFL lifer.

As @StLouHoo mentioned Groh had some college experience which I think helped shape his expectations and understanding. The previous experience is what likely led him to do what you mentioned and bring in coaches who were college lifers and knew the ins and outs of the the game.

Bellchick took the opposite approach and tried to outthink, and bend the college game to his will.

I’d also seriously question BB’s ability to assess talent at this point as well. He struggled in his later years in NE identifying actual talented players and the process is even more difficult when we’re talking about recruiting teenagers.

Groh had some of the NFL arrogance, but that staff still busted ass on the recruiting trail.

Is FSU as bad as last year? Who’da thunk? Also… why is their revenue share bigger in the ACC then? I kid because it won’t be if this continues.

21-7 GT over VT at half. Honestly could/should have been worse for VT.
