This was tough as both games were awesome. Winning a game in the Final Four was farther than we had ever gone, correct? Plus, that ending was also insanely cool. Kyle Guy was money those last seven seconds and I’m convinced it was going if he wasn’t fouled.
Agree. shot was dead on and short in scale to him getting touched back. amazing stuff
I also factored in Carson Edwards. He put on a show for the ages in the Purdue game and if not for Mamadi. He would be the name everyone talks about. Its rare to see a guy get hot like he did especially if he took an L
amazing. Carson found lot of new fans in UVa
He was so sick. Watching it the 2nd time and being able to appreciate the beauty of it. He rendered Hunter and Kihei worthless and they are 2 of the best on ball defenders in the country
I also forgot how good Kline was in that game. They had a really good team
So true cannot sleep on Kline. He was on fire as well.
I’m definitely an Edwards fan after that. I usually get upset (anyone else? Bueller?) when we lose to a team that I think we are better than because of some crazy performance. UMBC shot the lights out against us, we missed a ton of fast break points against Syracuse, and Carson was unstoppable. I was in Portland for work at a friends house for dinner and I was trying to stream that on my phone. It kept going out and I actually didn’t see the last few minutes live. Once Carson banked in the three I stopped running around trying to fond the best spot for streaming! One of my friends texted me that we had ties it up. I figured it was one of those UVA losses to a team that we can beat and it wasn’t our day. But I did watch again this week, what a game! Probably the best game of the tourney and a classic for years. As elated as I was after this, however, I was just walking around Minneapolis with a smile that never left my face between that game and the next. I had Auburn fans say stuff to me at bars and even walking out of the stadium and I just smiled. Loved it.
@Benrekosh and I had suspected that the Purdue win would win this matchup, but wowza, did not see 96% coming. Should have an interesting final matchup. I know Ben is working on a bunch of great content for the final, and we’ll be putting that poll up early next week, so be on the look out for that!
We’re also planning on starting another bracket (won’t give away what for, yet) shortly after we finish this one up. Still have some decisions to make, but this won’t be the end of our UVA basketball bracket content!
That Purdue game was one of the most skilled, high-level, entertaining college basketball games that has ever been played…
Well said @brogdonfanpage and everyone, be on the lookout for some great content. It does not stop here
Y’all are killin it
Totally, it’s awesome stuff! Keep it up please!
Both games had near impossible chances at the end. I thought we were done at the end of both. Good stuff but I think Purdue was better than Auburn by a little.
This is a tough one. Two great games. Judged individually you’d have to give the slight advantage to Purdue. Mind boggling execution by both teams showing incredible toughness and resiliency. Each player on both teams had an important highlight and contribution. Every inch, every tenth of a second felt crucial. A performance for the ages by a respected opposing player (the first player on a losing team to be voted MOP of his region in ten years). And a play that will be regarded as one of the greatest (THE greatest?) plays in not just Virginia sports history, but in NCAA tournament history.
But context matters.
Virginia - Texas Tech is one of the top ten if not top five national championship games ever. A slugfest of two top defenses, who ironically showed amazing skills on offense in the most important game of the year. Talent on both sides playing to their absolute limit. Our best player saving the best game of his career for his last. The biggest prize on the line. A year long comeback from a devastating loss ending in full redemption.
The choice is not easy, but it is clear.
Here. We. Go.
The final round of our bracket to determine the best UVA basketball game of all time between the 2019 National Championship vs Texas Tech and the 2019 Elite Eight vs Purdue.
Securing Tony Bennett’s first final four appearance, and Virginia’s first since 1984, the Wahoos beat Purdue 80-75. Dramatic moment followed dramatic moment, culminating in Kihei Clark’s ridiculous pass to Mamadi who floated the game tying buzzer beater at the end of regulation. Carsen Edwards went off for 42 points, while Kyle Guy recorded 25 points and 10 rebounds (his first double double) and Ty Jerome contributed 24 points, 7 assists, and five rebounds. Deandre Hunter scored the go ahead basket with 28 seconds remaining in overtime, and the program’s biggest win in decades was secured. Fittingly, the Cavs would go on to win the National Championship.
I’m certain we all have fairly good memories of the National Championship game, so I’ll just mention that the final score was 85-77, Deandre Hunter led the way for the 'Hoos with 27 points and 9 rebounds, and that he canned both the game tying shot to send the game to overtime with 12 seconds in regulation, and the go ahead three-pointer with roughly two minutes remaining in overtime. Kyle Guy and Ty Jerome both hit double figures as well, scoring 24 and 16 points, respectively, as Jerome also tallied eight assists. This was the program’s first National Championship (of hopefully many), and could not have come in more dramatic fashion.
After you vote, let us know your reasoning down below!
