Why not walk honeycutt? Guy behind him 3-4 sure but idk more out potential with 1st and 2nd in play
Boo
I hate UNC
2-0 start to the count was not helpful at all, especially with the first pitch definitely being a missed strike.
Not sure why we don’t walk him there.
Oh well, helluva mountain in front of us now.
Disappointing. Still go back to the 3rd inning and failed to get an extra run when just about any contact would do.
I would love someone smarter than me to explain why you don’t just walk Honeycutt in that situation. He’s the one guy you don’t want to beat you, and he’d be rendered literally meaningless at first base.
Our bats have essentially been non-existent all June. So what do we do? Try to muscle up fly balls into a 15-20 mph headwind.
Smart.
That’s 5 consecutive losses in Omaha
It’s Virginia in the postseason why would you expect anything different lol
I think the only argument is that Vance was 0-4 today and the guy behind him was 3-4. But I woulda still walked Honeycutt (I tried to will it at the TV) so you have more opportunities to get that third out at 1st or 2nd.
Why the hell did we pitch to Honeycutt?? That felt stupid before it happened
Never should have pitched to their best player in that situation. Wonderful that our guys are talented and get to Omaha but we make bad late game decisions there usually. Obviously left a lot of runners on base and we had a lot of early counts fly balls when conditions were not conducive for that. Love the team but wish they had played percentages and not pitched to their All-American needing one out with the bases open. At least throw it way off plate to chase or walk. Team has been great and hope they can win one now. It would be amazing to see them keep winning from here but need to at least win one.
The trend in the 2021, 2023, and 2024 CWS? Inability to drive in runs when the opportunities present themselves while the opponent comes alive in the last three innings.
We’re 1-5 in those CWS appearances.
The previous four we were 13-8.
Sometimes I wonder if we exhausted the entire program’s postseason luck and success for the next century in 2019 to have such a successful year.
Did someone make a deal with the devil or something?
I’ve got nothing after that. I mean we hit balls hard all day but the wind blowing straight in negated what could’ve been a lot of damage. That happens.
But what can’t happen is critical errors in decision making down the stretch. Absolutely 0 reason to pitch to him. Anyone who has even remotely followed this postseason knew that.
We were lucky to have even been in that position with how poorly we’d played/had luck go anyways. But then completely buried ourselves with a terrible decision.
The lack of adjustments from our hitters was frustrating. Park was playing very big with the wind blowing in and yet in the top of the 9th the two guys who are supposed to be the most disciplined hitters on the team are swinging early in the count and trying to hit a HR.
Have to take a line drive approach into Omaha unless the temperature is triple digits and the ball is carrying out, or else you end up with a bunch of lazy fly ball like we did today.
Well, so long Hoos. Would have to be absolutely scorching at the plate WITH some luck to make it out of pool play.
He has hit some huge HRs this year, but watching Didawick leave 6 men on all by himself made me pull what little hair I have left out. He is in an absolute funk (as are a few others). Stuck on Geloff’s record, which he won’t break in Omaha. Give Teel a shot at the plate.
And that is more throws than I can count on one hand that he has spiked 10 - 20 feet in front of him this year. The dude just cannot throw at all. It’s not all on him by any means, we had several warning track fly outs and other counts where we pressed with runners on instead of making their starter throw strikes and hunting.
Incredibly disappointing loss after making yet another comeback. Blanco pitched a hell of a game and Chase has been absolutely solid since regional play started. The pitching finally shows up and the bats go on vacation. Typical baseball honestly. Great game to play and watch, but can rip your heart out like no other sport really.
In our last six games in Omaha, our starters collectively have a 1.98 ERA and 1.03 WHIP on an average of 98.5 pitches thrown.
And we’re 1-5.
The bullpen was a problem in those games, but the bats were silent, too.
(Take out Abbott vs Tennessee — the game we won — and our starters have a 2.25 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. Do that — and you should be 4-1 at worst, not 0-5.)
Not that this would’ve made any difference whatsoever but I was a little surprised to see Teel in the field over Stephan.
Something I haven’t posted about but have been meaning to… Anthony Stephan is THE ultimate teammate. You have a guy who’s been there done that as far as he was awesome for us last year and in the postseason run that went equally as far. He started this year the 2 hole hitter and appeared (very early on) to be a key cog for us. But then he wasn’t. So much so to the point of he doesn’t even see the field.
You know what he’s done since? EVERY innning of supers and regionals both he was the first player out to congratulate his pitcher or teammates for a play in the field. And what happened when we were presented the trophy last week? The team made him the first person to hold it and carry it around. That’s a guy who could’ve “packed his bags” and mailed it in. But he didn’t. I really, really hope he plays a huge role for us next season.
