Sure. Simply that you were very blunt previously about how taine should be excluded from the rotation. He had the good game against memphis and you acknowledged it. But then then he came back with another strong game and you could have said something more definitive like “I have to say that Taine may well be in the process of earning a high profile role in acc play” rather than not acknowledging the second straight string game.
I don’t think that, though (that he should necessarily be on track to play big ACC minutes).
He’s had two very good games - his best two for us - following a string of very poor games.
I think he’s been inconsistent just like basically our entire backcourt. He should definitely be part of the rotation “wide net” theory as I mentioned after the Memphis game and if he continues to play well compared to everyone else then he should get the minutes he’s basically already gotten - but I don’t think he’s likely to sustain that level of play nor do I think he’s likely the best path toward us raising our ceiling. Not just relegated to mop up duty and get a chance to play well every game though, for sure.
But FWIW, I didn’t talk about anything in this piece aside from everyone needing to shoot more open shots and playing bigger.
I hear you, Doug, and I did not play, so take this FWIW, but a lot of the GSDs (l love that acronym and decree that we should all use it) in the clips cuts highlighted really are open shots (with the caveat that no-one under the boards might affect decision making).
I think what Cuts is pointing out is a tendency that TB’s teams have often displayed, and Ron’s team seems to be mirroring, of not being ready to shoot early in the clock - of defaulting to “run the offense” for the first 20 seconds or so when being ready to shoot on any catch might reveal opportunities when you’re really not being guarded, or not at all closely. On some of those clips, there’s no-one within 8 feet of the recipient, but it looks like he’s already thinking pass on the catch. By the time he reconsiders, if he does, the defense has reacted, making it a tougher shot.
But an emphasis on taking good shots earlier in the clock might change the mindset, so when Saunders runs to the top of the arc and gets a pass from the wing, if his first thought is shoot it, and his second is “continue the flow,” there might be more opportunities before people are guarding him.
Yea CeeJay. We have been saying this for couple 4 years. Be a threat. And when you are an unguarded threat let it fly!
Dont be a slave to running whatever the offense is
Twas brillig my guy
And also who cares if anyone is there for the rebounds cuz we don’t get offensive rebounds anyway
I was at the game and can attest that the crowd had gone into Hickory-Huskers-fans-in-the-first-few-games-of-the-season mode, yelling (or at least muttering) on multiple occasions, “Shoot the ball!”
A couple other observations:
-
We really struggled with their zone. I didn’t notice as much of an effort to get the ball into the middle of the zone as I’ve seen in previous seasons. Instead, the zone seemed to accentuate our tendency to make non-threatening passes around the perimeter.
-
Defensively, our post doubles were ineffective. They seemed to have little trouble making two or three passes to swing the ball to the opposite wing for an open three. It looked as though we weren’t particularly disruptive with the double teams and struggled with knowing when to disengage.
I love the “non-threatening” description of the passes around the perimeter. It has to go into the middle to someone who can do something with it. Ty was beautiful in that role.
As for Cofie’s reluctance to shoot, it seems like he has been instructed not to shoot the three anymore. As I have said before, we can’t have him at the top with no one really worried about guarding him. Sanchez should tell him something like this, “shoot that open three. If you miss 2 (3?) in a row, then that’s enough for today” . Rinse and repeat next game. Bet he starts making a few.
So, yeah, I don’t think we’re going to get there. There are just too many mental hurdles for us to overcome right now. Thinking the solution is heavy-iMac facilitation, the clear instruction for the team to shoot great, not good, shots, the clear preference for Cofie not to shoot as often from deep, four guard lineups used very recently, Robinson still viewed as only in the rotation when we have foul trouble…. It’s a lot of preferences for us to clear/overcome in order to get to this place.
I fully agree with this, and it’s depressing.
More like - shoot the open three if you miss two or three in a row, keep shooting that’s what you’re in there for
Or you make the first 2 and you have 4 free ones.
Thats how I always looked at it
I’m a fan of moderation, but when you’re at one radical extreme (like we are), you kinda might need to shock yourself out of it a bit.
But Ron is coaching for “attaboys” from Dick and Tony, not wins. (Prove me wrong, Ron)
He did mention talking to both often.
I’m not sure that’s going to lead to any changes to approach.
“Ron, we’d suggest a double-down and re-commitment to the principles…”. Watching us try to do this without Tony shows how difficult it is to be great at it.
Three in a row!
Coincides with the academic break. Profs are working him too hard (I’m half serious)
