✂ Cuts From The Corner: Tracking A Transfer - Christian Harmon

Oof - if anyone knows of any tips, please let me know. X “help” is wild. This should be the easiest open and shut case and just getting automated responses saying they can’t help and not to ask for help again for 7 days - which I’m ignoring.

Since I can’t communicate through Twitter at the moment (solution unclear) - here’s some upcoming stuff from Cuts:

Podcast with Preston - recording Thursday morning

Grading a German - Nolan Adekunle piece - likely out late next week

Tracking a Transfer - Jan Vide piece - late August.

Recorded before the new ruling but here is the Preston pod.

Did I hear you guess 8 minutes for Harmon? Or was it 18? Listened to the whole thing but as I was getting ready / multitasking

Just re-listened. Yeah, Harmon at 8. Gertrude ant 10 (or was that Preston) Interesting.

Gertrude is obviously the big wildcard. If he hits, he’s starter caliber. Feels like low single digits up to ~20 are all on the table for him.

Yeah I skewed low on Harmon. Probably lower than will be true - but his foot and defense and then adding up all of the other minutes ended up getting me there.

If we want to be a better transition team, feels like Gertrude has an important role to play. Dixon helps fill some of the gap left by Malik and Jacari, but if we want to be better and more frequently in transition, but of the guys with previous college experience, Elijah is probably best suited to play a significant transition offense ceiling-raising role.

Sounding like Vide is pushing hard for that backup PG role outside of just Odom’s comment though so I may already be out of date with what I’d say today

I’m just not sold he’s very good though.

If you’re basically a non-shooter from outside you’ve really got to make up for it in a lot of ways for it to be worth. Teams cheated off of him like crazy.

People were worried about Jalen Warley on that front and Vide was basically in that mold re: shot willingness last season without the athletic upside.

Was and still am holding out hope that some of the upside players rise to the occasion.

If Harmon is out, and Nolan isn’t here yet, then absolutely Vide has a wide open opportunity to ball out. He just needs to hang around with Dixon and outplay Elijah, making him the de facto first guard off the bench, and not get too embarrassed by Chance. Carve out a spot and then fend off Nolan and Harmon as much as possible whenever they join the rotation.

Nolan’s definitely here already…he was in a UVA IG video and I saw him walking from JPJA to Barracks. That dude is a TRUE 6’7”. Hard to believe Kalu is bigger than Adekunle after seeing both of them in the wild on separate occasions.

Yeah he’s here. Was with the team on their trip to DC over the weekend

I understand why backup C was always going to be a tough role to fill… but could we not have spent a bit more on a backup PG? Vide is wholly uninspiring and is the type of player that gets you killed in the second weekend of March

This doesn’t surprise me at all. I fully expected it from the day he committed. The alternative is a guy who has never played point guard in college. Ideally Chance stays healthy, we only need 10ish mpg from Vide and the rest of the bench mob can handle business.

I don’t think it’s surprising, I think it’s disappointing - unless he’s just really made leaps with his shot - which, that would be really surprising.

Every bit of evidence indicates they signed him more as a safety net - so the murmurings now that they’re playing likely indicates that it will be needed.

As far as backups go, I think our situation is fine. You’re not likely to have much success selling a really good PG on coming to UVa to play 10-12 minutes a game.

Behind PG1 Martin Carrere.

Would be so cool - but I was really hoping Eli would/will seize this opportunity.

Eli is a feel good story and it’ll be cool to see him get his UVA degree as a 4 year student next spring. That said, I’ve got zero expectation he’ll ever crack a UVA rotation. Not quite Majestic Mapp territory, but my bet is the combination of lingering injury and surgery effects and years of in-game rust are just too much to overcome at this level.

I’m looking forward to seeing how he looks after a full offseason of health.
