The fact that UNC gets thrown into this is so wild to me.
Weâve gotten plenty of guys UNC wantedâŚ.
We also got a kid that Creighton wanted bad (Andrew Rohde). And Jordan Minor was Iowa 1st choice for portal big.
Beat LSU and NC State (hometown) for Jayden Gardner. Beat Ohio State and Wisconsin for BVP.
The production from our transfers post no redshirt/NIL have been soso but we are still winning recruiting battles.
Duke also doesnt really portal except for a glue guy here or there.
No smoke of transfering but just an interesting name to monitor. Also was an academic honor roll. And a Puerto rican from New Jersey/maybe some overlap with Bliss?
Ironically had issues with grades in high school but seems to have turned himself around academically so thatâs huge maturity growth. Was 2x time Juco all american and was 43% from 3 at 6â9 230 in juco. Currently 39.3% on good volume.
His story has the classic ânew to basketballâ and âlate growth spurtâ features:

I randomly caught UABâs win over Memphis (back when Memphis was ranked for a hot second) and he definitely popped on the screen with his length and athleticism. He had 10 offensive rebounds against Memphis but also was throwing the ball into the 10th row as they were trying to close out a big win. Shooting 80% on FTs on a lot of volume too.
Yup. Definitely should be the one. Literally the homerun add at the 4 spot if he enters the portal. And heâs not one of these 30 pts a game guys so maybe not in the top tier.
5th year Reece
McKneely
Covid Year Jaemyn Brakefiled (once Beard goes to Arkansas)
Yaxel
Buchanan
with no hedging literally wins the national title.
Setting aside the no smoke about transferring part, 1 year non-grad transfers are kinda hard for us credits-wise, right?
Yeah I remember others mentioning that as well. Somehow it worked for Minor and Groves though so maybe?
Those guys definitely graduated though right?
I think Jayden Gardner is the one where there was trouble.
I do wonder what the grad transfer pool will look like after all the guys with COVID years are gone. I assume that will thin the pool a bunch.
The fact that we go head to head with Iowa so much is always surprising to me. Polar opposite programs in so many ways, including play style, coach demeanor, and geography. Maybe they canât decide if they want to be writers (Iowa) or readers (UVa still solid in Lit, right?)
-Only 1 year so gives way for Jacob Cofie
-Really good floor space to helps with that need
-Really good rebounder so help with that
-Can slide down to the 5 at times if Buchanan/Robinson not ready
-Can pick and pop but also feed down low
-Pretty solid defender too
This is the type I want⌠one year, plug and play guy. Bringing back experience at the other spots could help us ease the transfer in perhaps a bit more efficiently like with BVP (he acclimated quickly â problem is he just wasnât very good)
Yeah this makes too much sense. Perfect player to fit next yearâs needs.
âJerseyâ boy did he cross paths with X do you think?
Also does Sanchez actually speak Spanish? Just wonderingâŚ
Decided to look back on past portal threads. The first one that popped up was the âpositive portal threadâ for the 2022 offseason. And the first 300 posts are all under the assumption Kihei wasnât coming back and Igor was staying⌠![]()
So then the bigger problem is that we are not going after guys that really fit our system, regardless of whom theyâre getting recruited by⌠Or that our system is problematic to a degreeâŚ
When I think of recruiting these days, I think of what former LSU coach Dale Brown used to say, that he automatically deducts 2 inches from the listed height of any high school player he sees. So, if only to myself, I tell myself that
every player UVa signs is 2 inches shorter than listed. Some college and even NBA players seem to be at least 3 inches shorter than listed!
I heard another college coach, Chuck Noe, say that he measured the arm length of every recruit who visited his program, so that counts somewhat also!
UVa has got to have Reece Beekman back for next season, if he has a Covid year remaining. Being the only ballhandler on an ACC team is no place for a freshman guard. Harris is very quick, but UVa doesnât need a starting point guard who canât shoot.
So much is not known as far as the transfer portal goes. Who knows who will leave UVa suddenly? Who knows who UVa will get from the portal? ![]()
Funny you say that. Basketball height should be measured at the top of your shoulders not head
