February 2023 - UVA Basketball

Great game by Ty tonight. Stats won’t jump off the page but he was on the floor controlling the game when the warriors went from down to up 20. He’s doing everything necessary to lock up a spot in the rotation for the warriors.

Reece and Clark have destroyed the ACC so far this year. I said after the end of the season last year, on this board, that if Clark comes back that he and Reece will own the ACC. I will take my bow now .. thank you.

Miami beat us in December and they’re still looking really good now.

Duke guards outplayed them but your point stands that Beeks and Clark have been excellent.

I agree. Both of them are very good point guards.

I wanna be a little less arch, and a little more clear. I think Reece and Kihei are a better combo this year than they have been, mostly because they are both shooting much better and in Reece’s case learning to be more aggressive, more of the time. E.g., they were a bad combo Reece’s first year because Reece was playing shooting guard and he wouldn’t shoot. That was a problem! But it’s not a problem anymore. So they’ve solved that problem.

But the other issue last year was (1) Armaan was in a season long funk, and (2) playing Reece and Kihei together meant playing A at the 3, and he was too small to guard the awesome jumbo 3’s in the ACC last year.

So #1 was solved for Kihei and Reece because Armaan isn’t in a season long funk. And #2 was solved for us because the awesome jumbo 3’s who torched Armaan (Seabron, Griffin, Mucius, Cleveland) because he’s too short, are either gone (all of them but Cleveland) or playing on cruddy teams (Cleveland). And they haven’t been replaced. So I think that’s good! But when we play teams with awesome jumbo 3’s, I’d keep an eye out for how it goes. Earlier this season, we tried to make up for it by having Dunn guard the 3 (see e.g., Dunn blanketing Melendez), but now we’ve mostly put Dunn in the frontcourt. I guess when we played Michigan, we let Reece get torched, but that sort of highlights the problem…

(sorry to be the “all of our problems didn’t go away because we are doing really well in a really really bad ACC” guy, but also it’s true whether I type it or not)

an addition here – watch Armaan in his few minutes on Whitehead in the Duke 2H. The problem didn’t go away – we’ve been winning despite the problem still being problem (which, to be fair, is good!)

I saw him late on closeouts because he was helping Kihei or Reece recover from terrible PnR coverage. Did he have a lot of individual lapses in one-on-one defense apart from that?

I think there’s a fair question whether his overhelping is (1) someone else’s fault, (2) a system fault, or (3) his fault.

But no matter the answer, when you’re 6’6 and up (i.e., an actual small forward), you’re better able to close out after help D, than when you’re 6’4 (i.e., a shooting guard).

Another example - he got beat on a second chance / offensive rebound. His momentum was mostly taking him the other way, and Whitehead just beat him and beat Dunn, too, and Whitehead is gonna make millions because he’s good at that, so not saying it’s the worst thing. It’s just that Armaan’s size and only normal-ish athleticism (relative to the ACC level) becomes a detriment against the types of guys who fit that profile.

Man, we have 3 crappy games in a row. Always fun to watch UVa hoops, but yikes. There’s the ~28% (per KenPom) chance that we drop one, which stinks, but even if we win all 3, just seems like we have bleh hoops coming up. Then we go to Chapel Hill and see if Hubert can figure out how to corral all that talent into something resembling a decent team…

This is the difference when we ask if certain guys are pros. Whitehead is a pro. Not even a question

Just means we get to pay more attention to the ACC standings that’s bracketology for 10 days lol although the BC game is going to suck. Good chance we spend 38 minutes stressed about a bad loss while only feeling mild relief when we pull it out by 4 at the end

Boo. boo … never test the air with bad assumptions … boo, boo.
We have three tough games in a row and need to bring energy on offense.

I stand by it! If we lose, they will be extremely crappy, not less crappy!

Yep, he’s projected to be drafted between 20 and 28 in this year’s NBA draft.

I personally would take him earlier. Dude looks like a pro now. Even knows how to load manage already…

Not so sneaky really. Dude is everywhere

My biggest concern with Dunn is we may not get to experience his best in a Virginia uni. I’ll never argue to keep a guy from going pro, but I see such a bright future for him that he may be gone before the Hoos get to experience it in all it’s glory.
