That would be the genuine galaxy-brain move.
Boley is probably good enough to start this year, but he doesnāt seem to be 100%. If heās battling nagging stuff all year, not only will he play worse but weāll also need to go to the bench even more often. Which is fine,it happens a ton with an OL already. Those guy get little injuries during the best of times and, even without any serious injuries, youāre going to have 8+ guys getting a lot of snaps during a season.
But this yearās squad, at the moment anyway, has the most quality depth its had in a loooooong time. The drop-off from Boley to, I dunno, maybe Wyatt to tackle and Wigenton at guard, isnāt as huge as it would have been in recent years. Hopefully Boley gets back to full health while getting another year of growth, and we get him back next year even stronger and healthier.
Yeah, weād be a little worse off but for the first time in forever we can afford it and make next year stronger.
Edit - People are making good points about how important this year is, and I canāt really argue with that. CTE may not have the leeway to afford being 1% worse this year regardless of the gain next year. That having been said, whether Mills is here or not next year (probably not, but who knows?), isnāt really a factor. Having Boley and Mills at 100% next year would be an extraordinary foundation for next yearās line, but there are lots of things that could disrupt that anyway even if Mills decides to stay.
I know it will never happen but it would be awesome if the UVA football twitter account used this gif every time they get a commitment⦠beats that odd video bball twitter puts outā¦
Dear Deon:

Grad transfer BANDIT depth.
Looks beast!
Coaches are tweeting again this afternoon so maybe another one coming.
Secured another OL from Arkansas st!
I am legitimately excited about our football team. Roster looks great once we add another DB or 2. Tony, donāt blow this
OT: Boley, Witmer
OG: Josey, Sipe
C: Wilson, Metcalf
OG: Unamba,Wiggenton
OT: Wyatt, Thomas
Thatās a really large, experienced 2-deep. Sucks that we donāt have Mills but still should see a meaningful improvement up front.
Throw in 3 good RBās and much better QB play, and the offense could be really solid in spite of Des
I think Wiggenton may surprise at guard and Unamba may start at one of the tackles. Depth that Iām not sure weāve ever truly had. At least since Welsh days. Groh had good starters but lacked depth. Boley, Wyatt, Thomas, and Wiggenton will battle to start.
We will definitely learn something definitive about the offensive coachingā¦
2004 OL depth was ridiculous. At least 10 started at some point during their careers (maybe 12?), and five played in the NFL.
It was 12 ā Ferguson, Bart, Cunningham, Yarbrough, Brown, Darden, Butler, Lipsey, Ausberry, Pinigis, Stair, and Sammis. And Estes was a TE who played OT in the NFL. Stacked two-deep.
We definitely are trying.
