šŸ€ Goodbye Mover Blocker (Appreciation? Thread)

Based on that table, if this team got three more possessions a game they would be Houston! I’d take that.

lol … Remember in that data offensive rebounds are considered the same possession so the pace for some of those teams is not accurate like it is for us since we never go get an offensive rebound

Still a good offense with the right personnel. Won’t change my mind and can debate me.

Won a lot of games using mover-blocker. Even this season turned around when we went back to it. I don’t care if we move away from mover-blocker, but I certainly won’t badmouth it….

At its best blocker mover delivered some of the best offensive efficiency in the country. It was slow, but it was beautifully effective. At its worst (last year or 2020), it was brutal. I will stay on the hill of its the execution and the players, not the system.

That said, I also won’t mind moving on to a new offense that focuses on 3s and shots at the rim, plays faster, and gets more offensive rebounds.

In many ways, the offense begets the players.

Which is the best offense?

Yeah, I never loved Blocker-Mover. It was a tweak of a screen and rescreen motion offense that locked players into set, usually predictable roles. That’s good for a young or inexperienced team who can’t be trusted to run a system, but not good for a deep, talented, and experienced team that can be trusted to run a system.

Using Blocker-Mover to teach players roles and a variety of screening and rescreeing actions, especially for a young or unfamiliar team makes sense. Handcuffing a creative, experienced team with Blocker-Mover was nonsensical.

UVa did both.

And I’d argue that teaching a strong and talented team motion principles and setting them free would have been more effective than even ā€œthe beautifully effectiveā€ Blocker-Mover … with those players.

But that is all water over the bridge now,

I can’t argue with that. I would also add that it fits some player profiles better than others - serving as a particularly good match for the mid-2010s Hoos, and a terrible match to the 23-24 squad.

I believe one of you made it to the game. About 20 minutes in… a kid came through the midfield and for some reason had his hands up in front of his face and raked his fingers across an opponent’s eyes. It was clearly accidental and I issued the yellow card.

One of the fans in the stands (which one of you was it???):

ā€œGet your head out of your ass referee! That’s a red card!ā€

I wanted to yell back… ā€œAre you a UVA fan?ā€
