🏀 Greatest Hoops Game you attended

Other than the Natty and why was it so great.

Mine was the Acc tournament championship between Maryland with Lucas, McMillan, Howard etc vs State with Thompson, Burleson etc. Was only a kid but damn what a game.

2014 Syracuse to win the ACC regular season. Camping out over night. Getting to sit close to behind the UVA bench. The energy in Charlottesville afterwards

Duke UVA my grad school year when Joe Harris scored 36 points. Rushed the court, crowd got under K’s skin, and then we all went to Boylan and a good chunk of the team showed up later that night.

Uva win over Albany to end our ncaa tourney win drought in 2007. (I know, not that impressive; didn’t get to see any of the big Bennett wins in person).

Probably a tie - first 2 rounds of 2016 madness in Raleigh…
1st game vs Hampton - a true blowout as the Hoos shot 55% FG and 12/25 on threes… up 40-21 at halftime of a madness 1st round game was weird and wonderful.
Then the next round vs Butler - down 25-23 at halftime - another nervous tight madness game again … and then the most beautiful half of Hoo basketball I’ve ever witnessed - 54-44 in the 2nd half … yes - we scored 54 in a half against a single digit seed in the madness… Toney and Gill were unstoppable combining for 29 points on 12/14 shooting and 5/6 at the FT line and Brogdon had his best madness game of his career with 22 points on 8/14FG and 6/6 FT but more importantly shut down the Butler dude who our bigs couldn’t stop - he had 24 points with 16 minutes left and had just scored 12 in a row in the 2nd half when Brogs started guarding him and had 1 point the rest of the way…
Again - 54 points in a half for a Tony team in the madness - I was laughing and crying!!

Also remarkably - the Hoos scored 27 points in the first 10 minutes and 27 points in the last 10 minutes of the 2nd half.

Was that the singletary snarl game?

Duke 2007 is the Singletary snarl game

Singletary was 2007. I remember because someone had an extra ticket for me. I didn’t end up going because it was Valentine’s Day and I was dating someone shitty who I knew was shitty in the front of my brain but had convinced myself otherwise at the time. Now I regret it forever.

Going back to topic: Favorite game I saw live was probably Duke lose to Michigan State in DC in the elite 8. It was the day after we beat Purdue to make the final four, and I got to watch this complete douche bag Duke fan have an epic meltdown. Great game.

For a non Hoo game it was in the nineties when Shaq was with Orlando and came to LA to play the Clippers who had Stanley Roberts - the only human in the NBA near his size and strength …. Refs let em play that day - I had floor seats under the basket it was glorious

Ralph’s last home game in UHall. People wore tuxedos and Ralph willed us to win. I was in the second row jumping up and down on a folding chair and it collapsed. Unbelievable atmosphere.

Held them to 27 points for the whole game and Mike Tobey balled out! Great first game for me to attend!

UVA vs Michigan St, sweet sixteen at the Garden. Even though we lost, was an incredible game and felt like we had arrived on the national stage after mired in mediocrity for so long.

Most hyped - Ralph v Ewing in DC

Ralph’s last game in U-Hall - I was on the floor right under our basket for the second half

UVa - UNC Feb 1975 65-62 after El Deano said we wouldn’t win a game in the ACC that year

Non UVA game was WF vs UNC in 1995 ACC tourney (Childress game) and for UVA games it was likely the 2000 game against UNC where we won in CH at that time like for the 3rd time ever. Memorable b/c I lived in the triangle then and was surrounded by UNC fans. Both games I had fantastic seats so it made it even better.

For me it was the Richard Morgan 39 point game against UNC on January 15, 1989. That was incredible. Late in the game he was all alone on a fast break and pulled up for a three that of course he swished. I’ve never been in an environment before or since that was as crazy as U-Hall that night. I was there with my fiance, another Wahoo, less than 2 months before our wedding.

Sometime later I was playing with some friends in the Beta Hoop-a-thon and we played a game against a team that Morgan was on. He pulled up and drained three over me, and I couldn’t have been more honored.

The Richard Morgan game is my second. Beating #4 Duke in 1990 probably third. And one of the Crotty vs Corchiani games probably top 5.
