Am curious why people love Pop

You and I both… simply got lucky that Robinson got hurt and they were so bad they lucked into Duncan even though the Celtics had the best odds. And then worked for a front office that grabbed Parker and Ginobili.

Pop without Duncan and Belichick without Brady.

Same same

Who knows? We might be talking about Pitino as a great all time pro coach if Duncan had gone to the Celtics?
Would have had Duncan as the sure fire producer and might have taken a chance on Tracy McGrady with their other top 10 pick - and then they might have still been bad enough the next year to get Paul Pierce with the 10th pick … fun things to think about. :joy:

I’ll give him credit for transitioning the Spurs from a post up grond it team to a flowing offense we saw in 12/13ish. One of the first to see success with that.

Also longevity will cover a ton of warts. While he’s likely over stayed his welcome he did it well for a long time.

You can trash Pops for winning with Duncan etc. But everyone who wins in the NBA does it dripping with talent. Even sh$ty coaches steal championships by riding talent to the promise land.

Pop stopped the experiment. It was mostly to play Wemby at the 4 instead of the 5 and to get their best 5 on the floor. But now that Wemby’s playing C, Sochan’s back to PF and Vassell and Branham are doing the PG duties. Still not sure why it isn’t Jones, but I guess Pop just likes Branham better for some reason.

Fair enough I have not followed the Spurs closely. The last two times Insaw them Sochan was at the 1 during the in season tourney

These are all interesting. Some coaches, like players, find that perfect situation somehow. Pop got Duncan, Tony and Manu plus a host of others that had to buy in

I just never appreciated Pop being condescending answering questions and what not.

So uhhh… what do you guys think about Phil Jackson?

The only coaches with more titles than Pop are Auerbach and Jackson. So, yeah, they had some generational talent on their teams.

My friend attended Pomona when Pop coached there, and said Pop actually was very approachable and easy to interview. Even now, if you ask him a thoughtful question, he’ll give you an extensive and thoughtful answer. He just doesn’t bother to hide his disdain for stupid questions.

I went to my first nba game thx to him

Because Jones is a dookie…

It’s a 45-day contract, and this article puts the #1 salary between among the teams in the Euroleague at $5M/year (and $2M makes the top 10):
