That area is a great area… the Tuscany coast from Chinque Terre around to Nice/Monaco into France, heck even down to Pisa… can’t go wrong anywhere along the way. US Army has a base right outside of Pisa, Camp Darby or USAG Livorno if you want to technical… if you have a military ID, you can stay in the bungalows on the post for around $50/night.

Back when my son was still playing travel baseball, I used to ā€œbroadcastā€ the games for the other parents through the Gamechanger app. It was a lot of fun and I couldn’t believe how much the parents appreciated it.

So being on this end of the ā€œbroadcastā€ for a change was a real treat. Even though I ā€œwatched it on tape delayā€ as it were, I was on the edge of my seat.

Thanks so much!

That’s as scary a look as Tony will give anyone that I’ve ever seen.

Did you just walk into the gym? How did you know locations beforehand?

Planning my 2026 already

Yeah all nine games I’ve been to are basically in practice gyms, and I just walk in. Some have had other random local or home team fans. Some haven’t.

Getting the location info is the rub. For Spain, everything was top secret. I reached out to someone at UVA who I didn’t know and just asked and after the person made me promise not to share the info, I got it. UVA never released the info until after games and CTB asked me with legit surprise at the first one: how did you know we’d be here? For Italy I stayed in touch with a someone from the Spain trip who got me the info before I asked—I think in April. And I think I had dates and cities before exact gyms. For Italy, things were much less secret, there was a Virginia sports article that listed all cities and dates (though not gyms I believe.) So after the 2026 season, you could reach out to someone likely to have the info and hopefully they’ll give it to you.

The dates have been about the same for three straight trips, so you know which 2 weeks to keep free and then a few months before you can hopefully get flights. The game times were the last mystery. I was told they would all be 6 pm. That turned out not to be the case, but uva hoops twitter was posting the times on game day.

Saying you are a god among men feels like an understatement. I’m serious. Your sleuthing, scouting and game commentary were spectacular.

Yeah not only giving us the play by play but also presenting the info clearly and concise. A+ job @rushdacote

It was a guy he met after hours in the Elliewood Avenue Parking Garage who sounded a lot like Hal Holbrook.

This whole thread has been wonderful, but this is an all-timer post right here. Put it in the LRA Pantheon.

There was more of a safety concern with Spain than in Italy. That was the reason for the secrecy. Don’t recall specifics, but I think they were worried about some terrorist attacks that had happened more recently.

Vaguely remember something happening while Clemson was there.

It was when the Catalan separatist stuff was much hotter than now
