I donāt see it because Gardner is probably a hair better than BVP on O and moderately better on D.
Last year Gardner 108.7 ORtg in the ACC on 26.8% usage. BVP 113.6 in the MAC on 20.3% usage. Slight advantage in efficiency for BVP but the huge extra usage for Gardner and the superior opponents makes me give him the offensive edge. (I am solely relying on those numbers not what I saw in Italy, but BVP was quite off in the final two games.)
On D, Gardner has a year in the packline and showed steady improvement throughout the year, so I think he will be ahead of BVP there all year.
Smart money (IMO) for game 1 is Jayden and Kadin. But nobody has accused me of being smart in a while.
Gardner is better than BVP in a vacuum, but BVP gives the team ability to spread the floor a bit better. Which seems to have been a goal offensively from the little I could glean. And also from the little I could glean, there wasnāt much evidence that the likely starting backcourt has made great strides in being able to stretch the floor.
Edit - to be fair, BVP didnāt show much success from the arc, either. But at least he showed a lot of willingnessā¦
I also think Gardner will start over BVP, but where we are by mid-ACC season is somewhat of an open question. Iād think Gardener is the heavy favorite, but you never know.
Separate but related, I think one thing Iām taking away from the Italy trip is that Iām not expecting some gigantic magical change in any of our guardsā games. Mainly, Iām not expecting Kihei, Reece, or Armaan to suddenly become deadly from behind the arc. Not that I was before really - itās rare for that to happen - but now Iām definitely more conservative on it now. To get three-point shooting, weāll probably have to play other guys that can shoot it. Because of that, I could see McKneely working his way into the starting rotation by mid-ACC season, I just donāt know if thatās in place of Armaan or somebody else. Itās going to be interesting.
If BVP canāt stretch the defense, thatās going to be pretty disappointing. Weāre so desperate for shooters. At this point McKneely seems to be our best hope for this year.
Iāll cut BVP some slack for his poor performance in Italy. Itās his first live action with the team. Heāll be fine. I worry about Gardner though. I think itās a real possibility BVP overtakes him by Jan.
All this first game lineup talk is silly. Itās gonna be exactly the same as last Marchā¦ā¦but Iād bet a good amount tht wonāt be the lineup come Jan.
Not much from Armaan so hard to draw many conclusions. Reece + Kihei ā Iād say the last game was a nice data point in terms of taking the team on their shoulders as needed. Not much data on their shooting from the perimeter, which I agree is at least slightly notable.
Clips? What clips? There are no clips circulating at all, random UVA staffer reading this thread. Nothing to see here. The footage is just hallucinations us UVA fans are having from the awesomeness of the VAsports walking to the bus highlights
I honestly believe that after a couple seasons, Isaac M and Isaac T will be the āKyle Guyā and āTy Jeromeā of our team. They will be the foundation and make this team a contender. We need that other guy who can take the ball and score like Dre. I see some of the other pieces that can work in various roles like Bond and Buchanan. Maybe Dunn can become the āDreā or more likely heāll be in another role, but I think we need a couple more of the right pieces that can score and then hope for good fortune with health and ball bounces.
I agree with this. I think Power is potentially that Dre type guy as well. Thatās why I hope we get him so bad. Dunn, Gertrude, Buchanan, Bond seem like they could be our Diakite, Huff, Key like pieces.
