50+ points in 3 out of last 5 games. At 23 yrs old? The NBA has never seen anything like this. He is already averaging 33.4 ppg in the playoffs which is tied for 1st with Michael Jordan. This dude is already top 5 in league history in scoring 40+ points in a playoff game and he has only been in the league for 4 yrs. Barring an early career ending injury this dude hands down will become the GOAT.
I believe comparing Doncic’s play to those who played in the 80s (and before) is problematic. With the rule changes (WRT freedom of movement), there is no telling how Magic Johnson or Michael Jordan would perform in today’s game. Also, there is no telling how Doncic would have fared in the more physical game of 30+ years ago. What can be said is that he is absolutely brilliant in today’s game. There is also a flip side to such speculation, too. Which player, or players, stuck on the end of the bench in their time, would have shined if they played in a different era? You know that there are a few.
He just added a 51 pt, 9 assist 6 rebound 4 steals game to that …
Terrible this kid …
Doncic is incredible and fun to watch. Can’t compare him to a Michael Jordan because they are so different. And MJ was a 9-time first-team All Defensive Team player. Doncic is, charitably, an ‘uninspired’ defender. And I seriously doubt he would be scoring this much in the late 80’s early 90’s when you risked injury every time you went in the lane.
Safe to say that Tony would have red-shirted Doncic until he proved he could play the packline.
I’m not sure that an in his prime Bill Russell is an NBA starting Center in this era. Or at least his playability in the playoffs would be questionable against many opponents.
Doncic does not play defense on the level of Jordan. Jordan was a great defensive player. Could Jordan ever assist like Doncic? Could he ever rebound Like Doncic? At 23 Doncic is the 1st player in NBA history to score 60 points and get 20 rebounds while accomplishing a triple double.
Jordan is still the goat in my opinion. But there is no doubt that a new sheriff is in town and his ceiling is higher than anything we have seen in a long time.
And, at the same time, you might wonder what Pete Maravich might have accomplished in today’s game. He was pretty good then. Now?
Thanks for the laugh … hilarious…
The Russell v. Chamberlain matchups were awesome. Physical games!
Look … Pistol Pete was from another planet. Nobody ever has done with a basketball what that dude did. 50 yrs later he is still the all time leading scorer in college basketball history. There was no 3 point shot and he only played varsity for 3 yrs. He averaged 44 points per game for his college career. He also was the greatest passer to ever play the game. By far.
His NBA career was cut short due to injuries. There will never be another Pistol Pete …
True statement. The televised games against Kentucky with Dan Issle were something. Issle drop 40+ and Maravich scored 60+. Another great scorer of that era was Calvin Murphy.
I grew up watching Pistol Pete. After every game i seen him play (weather permitting) several of us would go to the hardtop and try to play like him. Good times
Yep he played HS basketball here in Raleigh.
Just returning the favor buddy. You keep doing you.
In his college career Pistol Pete scored 50+ points 28 times … with no 3 point shot. Are you f’n kidding me …
This while also dishing out an LSU record number of assist …
