March 2023 - UVA Hoops

Agreed; NIT → ACC champs + sweet sixteen with the same five starters would be an incredible, incredibly success

Disagree with 1. We played great without him vs. UNC and Clemson, but he was a game-changer vs. Duke in Charlottesville and we missed him last night.

There will be matchups where our opponents clog the lane (B/M and triangle) and we’ll need a big to stretch the floor. Dunn could be that guy but the defense doesn’t respect his jumper at all.

I am keeping UVA a 4 and Duke a 5. Indiana a 4 and A&M a 5. If A&M wins today they have a legit argument to be a 4, but the committee is inconsistent year to year in how much they value conf tournament performance. It is why I kept Duke a 5 and did over-react and move them to a 4. There seems to be more value in reg season performance vs conf tournament performance. Reg season performance we outperformed Duke.

I agree with this in that it raised my expectations to ‘won’t embarrass themselves when they lose’ as was my fear for most of February. Think Torvik’s 33% to make the sweet sixteen is optimistic though unless we get Lafayette in the first round

I know James Jones has had some talent there, but I’d really like to get Yale

We’d be a 3-4 point favorite against Yale. Reason I want Lafayette is there is a gap between them and the rest of the projected 12/13 seeds on KenPom. Looking like a 3-5 point favorite against the rest of the teams and an 8 point favorite against the Cajuns. Haven’t actually seen most of these teams before this week

Plus of course, I forgot, Yale still has to win today

Yep. And trend data looks good for Yale, Iona and some others. LA Lafayette and Kent State look fine, but not great.

I watched their final yesterday. Kent State would be an awful matchup for us.

Those guys played with energy + athleticism. Switched and pressured everything.

There’s a reason they put both Zags and Houston on the ropes.

Yea they were good all year. Plus MAC teams know Ohio beat us a couple years ago and will have confidence from that. One of the less desirable matchups for us imo

Didn’t Kent state almost beat us at home recently?

Edit: I think it was the year Ohio beat us cause they had beaten Kent state easier than us.

Yup they took us to OT

Getting to Alabama would be a huge win for this team

The goal is to just win a game. Anything else is a cherry on the top and onto next season.

Especially if we’re a 5. Beat seeds lower than us, cherry on the top if we beat a higher seed.

After watching the B/W scrimmage my expectations for this team were finishing in the top 1/3rd of the ACC, getting a 5 or 6 seed in the NCAAT and making at least the round of 32. So far we’ve surpassed 2/3 of those goals, yeah it’s been frustrating at times but overall this has been a good season up to this point.

I’ll also add that if we’re a 5 and play a 4, score more than 39 points though lol.(Ik we were the 5 in that scenario but still)

I would consider any 1 seed a problem lol. But I agree that Bama is an especially poor matchup for us.

Fortunately, the committee has no logical defense to put Florida into this year’s tournament, even as a 12 or 13.
