šŸ€ Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

Throw in Odom only if he convinces Aldrich at Longwood to join his staff (assistant at UVA makes more than Longwood head coach/ although Aldrich isn’t hurting for money)

I am a fan, have said it before. But it’s really based on his Youngstown St time; being successful at Utah St is just the cherry on top and confirmation of what he can do. Utah St has been a good job for launching coaches recently, but that’s only been the case since 2018-19. They had their own case of ā€œlegendary coach hands the reins to his longtime assistant and it doesn’t go wellā€ with the Stew Morrill transition before striking gold with 4 coaches in a row.

Agreed. For me it was his overall resume that made me a fan. Success at Youngstown st. Familiarity with the DMV/PA/NJ/OH/MI recruiting markets as well as now ties to the West Coast was very interesting to me. He’s young but has a lot of experience. Finally His buyout sits somewhere between $1.5-3mil not bad at all.

Would be whiplash going from Bennett to Calhoun pace of play.

I know some have conflicting opinions on Buzz Williams but… I mean… the resume is pretty impressive. More likely he ends up as Texas’ next head coach than UVA’s head coach anyways

Bring this guy with him…

Yes pls.

Calhoun isn’t a win the press conference guy, but certainly one I could live with and get excited about.

Liking Calhoun at first glance. Continuous improvement at a place like Youngstown St is pretty impressive.

The one thing giving me pause is his post season results. Doesn’t seem to have much success in conference tournaments at all (has never won one at the D1 level and seemingly hasn’t even made a deep run). You’d expect a great coach to over perform in a tournament every once in a while. Not looking for a ton but anything at all would be encouraging. Maybe he can do something with Utah St this year.

I remember watching Griff Aldrich and Seth Eilberg at Norfolk Academy. They were really good. Aldrich the scorer, Eilberg the tall, modestly-athletic but very crafty PG, very similar to Ty Jerome.

Buzz can coach he can do all the things you want from a coach. The problem is he is Buzz and you have to be willing and ready to accept everything that comes with that.

Yeah totally out on Buzz. May win but would totally diminish my good will for the team. He’s good at a place like aTm where they enjoy being a heel.

If we’re gonna hire a Texas coach it should be Grant McCasland.

I’m souring on Odom. Especially as we’ve seen the last two coaches Utah State coaches have similar/better results.

Generally, the ā€œpretty good results at a mid-major, not dominant over a sustained period in their conferenceā€ coaches that are coming to a P5 job haven’t been immensely successful. Haven’t been flops, haven’t been great though.

Throw Rhoades in there for me as well. Wes Miller maybe too.

Yeah, Buzz to UVA is a non-starter. Whispers of seedy recruiting dealings in the past and pretty universally considered a weird dude by VT folks.

I’ve sat in an office with Buzz while he was on a recruiting visit to a high end Va school. He can sell etc. Nothing shady but he is a character and a good ol boy. Rolled in plopped down in a chair feet up and immediately packed a lipper and got to talking shit.

I cannot imagine him rolling up in his office in Charlottesville with a fat lip of Copenhagen and his feet up on the desk.

I was a hard pass on Buzz until I read this:

The blue hair, wine and cheese, holier than thou crowd could use a good roll in the dirt.

Not saying I’m against it. Ig I wasn’t working I would have asked him for a pinch. But I’m not sure the overall Virginia crowd is ready for that.

He’s probably on Zyns now
