I will say if Shaka Smart wanted to leave Marquette, this is a pretty good time for it. He has a team being carried by a good group of seniors. They wonāt have a bad team left but thereās probably at least a temporary step back coming. His best freshman is from Pittsburgh, a couple incoming east coast recruits. So heād easily take them all with him.
I have a genuine take here. The university is the flagship for the Commonwealth (yes, gonna use the hoity toity term). The mission statement talks about developing responsible citizen leaders. Thereās a particular august quality (a fair critique would be to say that it leans towards elitist) that it has cultivated over its existence; itās the kind of thing that happens when the lineage back to a Founding Father is a Very Big Deal for your institutional mythos. The MBB coach is a very prominent public face for the university, so thereās always gonna be some importance placed on that person Fitting Who We Are.
You can just come out and say you want Chris Beard. Donāt have to fancy it up like this.
(Serious note, I totally agree. Although, cynical take, if someone wants a winning dirt bag thereās plenty of justification juice among the founding fathers to have your cake and eat it too)
Also Marquette just had to hire a new president and AD Iām pretty sure.
We just need Nova and UF to not come open and make the choice harder for him if he were looking to move.
The UVA coaching search jinx lives on. I tune in to experience Calhoun and instead Boise State is 10-16 from 3 so far
What about Bryce Drew? He had a down season at Vandy but has been very solid at Valparaiso and GCU
Nova is looking like Neptuneās to keep recently and if UF opens up that would mean Florida made some MAJOR judgement errors keeping him in place despite the allegations. Indiana could still be in play and Florida State may move on from Hamilton this year but these jobs plus Miami seem like the major ones in play (pending retirements, dream jobs opening up really good jobs, etc)
Javan Buchanan the NAIA transfer we were briefly connected with is having a decent season for Boise State. Averaging 10 and 4 coming off the bench with nice shooting splits.
Heās got 9 points in this game.
I think itās in context to Shaka Smart. Shaka was an assistant at Florida under Billy Donovan. Not sure of the Villanova connection but @chavlicek15 has mentioned it. Donāt think Shaka would care much for FSU or Miami (which is Will Wade most likely)
Theyāre getting back into it here.
Four total turnovers all game. Combine that with 32 points in the paint and 58 percent shooting? Yeah I might not hate Calhoun after all!
Boise St was 10-16 from 3 up double digits, and Utah State came all the way back. Different sport than what Ive been watching the last few years.
Also Boise St has 68 points but at the same time Utah State has forced numerous shot clock violations.
edit: wow their starting pg 0/5 fts and their big misses 4 fts in a row. Unreal choking And Buchanan the NAIA guy is balling
I like this question because it kind of serves as a crowd sourcing tool in which there may be some posters that either know, are connected to, have researched other coaches and it trickles downto the powers that be. Iām not saying theyāre going to follow our wishes but they may check out someone that was mentioned on this board.
I like Calhoun. The caveat is he cant bring any of the Utah St players with him. All replacement level at best benefiting from Calhounās coaching
edit: holy shit no one on this Utah St team can make free throws. You come back down double digits and you are going to lose because you went 0 for like 15 from the free throw line in the final 5 minutes unreal lol. Thankfully Calhoun will have the NOAH system to work with at UVAā¦
edit 2: OMFG WHAT AN ENDING.
Idk if Calhoun is gonna end up as our coach but I do know that was a fun ass basketball game. Definitely a palate cleanser after what we had to sit through earlier.
If you hear rumors leak during a coaching search, you can 100% be sure that at least one of them is a trial balloon floated by someone on the hiring side, the AD, a search committee member, a board member, the search consulting firm.
Tennessee didnāt hire Greg Schiano after his name was floated because of massive bad feedback from the fanbase.
Or a few weeks back when Dave Clawson retired, the Athletic ran an article about possible replacements and listed 6 or 7 names including the seemingly random guy at Washington State with no ties to the East coast. Guess who was hired 2 days later?
But that comes near the end and itās more about who the fans will reject than about who they want.
Iām not on the Capel train, but this is kind of a built-in advantage in todayās game.
I unironically believe top coaches in one sport could switch sports and still win at a very high level. Maybe exclude football since itās so Xās and Oās heavy and you basically have to try to predict what the other team is going to do every play. But coaching, especially at the professional level, is more about people management than anything else. Basketball coaches could succeed at soccer. Soccer coaches could succeed at hockey. Etc
Basketball to soccer no chance in USA
Theres no coaching in soccer send some guys out there and tell them to run around.
In all seriousness the problem with bringing in a coach from another sport becomes winning the locker room. No matter the sport at some point descisions need to be made and if the person doing that is not respected by the players due to a lack of knowledge either perceived or real youāre going to have a problem.
Best case scenario a team needs an established leadership and on court/field leadership. That basically doesnāt exisit in the 1ndone/NIL/Portal era of college basketball.
You basically complete the transition of making college hoops AAU.
