Yeah, Portland has seemed like a hard job for a while. Eric Reveno had a couple of good seasons but scuffled for a long time. The Terry Porter era (coincidentally very connected to the Bennetts) was not good either.
I think weâre overrating the Odom odds. He was certainly the odds on favorite at the beginning of the season, but I really think he needs to make the tournament to even be a low end option, and I think that is far from a given.
I donât think those were unreasonable thoughts. By all accounts Drew thought pretty hard about it, and most normal human beings would take the UK job over the UConn one. I also think Donovan would have been interested but the NBA timeline is just too long to wait in the portal era from Kentuckyâs perspective.
I think their insanity came from starting that morning thinking they were throwing $10+ million at Hurley and how could he say no to ending the day with Pope who had never won a tournament game. It definitely felt like Barnhart skipped a few steps in there, and I think their response was reasonable. If we go from Shaka on a plane in the morning to a guy with a resume worse than Ryan Odomâs at night, I might lose my mind too.
Seems like he nailed it though.
My girlfriendâs family are huge Kentucky fans and I lived every excruciating minute of this search a little too vividly. KSRâs Matt Jonesâ voice is still echoing in my head from his nightly Twitter spaces during the process.
Kentucky fans are insane, but I donât think their coaching hire expectations even crack the top 20 for reasons why.
Danny Hurley and Scott Drew never seriously considered UK. Neither did Donovan. But their fans thought there was no way in hell that that was the case. It, in fact, was the case.
And thatâs not me talking about their delusions. The boosters knew this to be the case, too. They knew that the money the admin was trying to throw at those three wouldnât matter. They. Werenât. Seriously. Interested.
My thing on Kentucky was it wasnât that their thoughts on potential coaches was off, it was that they essentially forced Cal out and thought theyâd just get any coach they wanted. Cal had an extremely successful tenure there. But success constantly craves more success and in this case he hadnât strung enough luck together in the tourney for awhile and he lost out to the ravage of the fans. Why any big time coach who wasnât an alum wouldâve wanted the job at that particular time is beyond me.
Danny Hurley was never real, but Scott Drewâs family flew to Kentucky to check it out! He and Mitch Barnhart are close friends! He was absolutely seriously considering it!
Weâll never quite know about Billy because of the timeline, but his only quote on the matter was âI have not been contacted by anybody, I havenât spoken to anybodyââ not exactly the denial of a guy who wouldnât consider it.
Mike Young retirement rumors in Blacksburg apparently. No idea how attractive their job is; of course there are a ton of mid majors looking for a power 5 spot but Hokies are literally the worst resourced basketball power 5 program. Trilly thinks if revenue sharing gets approved that could help a little.
I might be proved wrong but I still feel like the perception of what revenue sharing means is off. People seem to assume that every school is going to hand out the $20M to athletes. Iâm doubtful itâll be anything like that. For some, absolutely.
