🏀 Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

What are you arguing? That Wisconsin would’ve wanted to have Tony after he won the natty and they kinda stank?

Yes, I suspect they would’ve. But when I said “the timing didn’t match up” that means it has to match up for both sides.

I guess I’m missing what you’re arguing? Reasonable thinking would be at ANY point Wisconsin would’ve taken him, especially either 2018 or 2019

2018: mentally Tony could’ve said you know what I gotta get outta here. There’s no coming back from this. I need to be home. (I am eternally grateful he didn’t)

2019: mentally Tony could’ve said OMG I FREAKING DID IT! I have proven that anything is possible! There’s nothing left I can’t do here… why not go home and build upon the legacy my father left? (Also happy he didn’t do this)

Schools were checking in on him (see: Tony still hasn’t said no to UCLA :joy:)

Idk maybe I was just that insecure to the idea that the best thing to ever happen to UVA would be drawn to take up the family mantle at some point?

What I said in this post:

Then you kept quibbling with various things I said in it, and I kept responding.

This is going nowhere. You can be correct/are correct because it never happened. Back to the next coach talk…

When has any of this ever gone anywhere? Why should this be the first time?

I’ll throw this in the mix: multiple NBA teams inquired when he really had it rolling (2015-2020). Was just never the right situation. Believe there were some misgivings regarding ownership and management of specific franchises as well as a worry that NBA players have/had so much power. I know there were also a bunch of college teams back channeling (Indiana, LSU, UCLA lol) but never got the sense there was a ton of traction there.

I’m not sure that Wisconsin had that much sentimental draw for Bennett anyway. He didn’t go to school there and he was an assistant to his dad for only 4 years. Between that and Wisconsin being his home state, I’m not sure that’s enough to go to a place with worse facilities and resources in (at the time) a far inferior conference.

One more thing about Tony and leaving for another job, during his tenure here:

Before the 2014 season, he wouldn’t have been that sought after for any high level coaching vacancies. He had four okay, but not that good seasons.

Then after 2014, he jumped fairly quickly to “look what he has going there - why would he leave?” status.

Post 2014, as @XHoo points out, there was mild concern he might want to leave for the NBA, but not too much angst, if I’m remembering correctly.

I had heard UCLA did inquire and he did consider, briefly.

And I would chuckle to myself when people would make “UCLA —Tony hasn’t said no” jokes on the internet as he had said no.

(Emphasis added by me) And this basically explains the post rule change swoon…

Our offense sucks. The ball is passed passively 30+ feet from the basket for most of the shot clock. Try something different. We feed the post fewer times than any other team in CBB. Cofie and Saunders could be effective down low if given the ball. Invert the offense and feed Rohde in the post. He is pretty good in there against shorter guards.

Yeah, Rohde is solid against mismatches, esp against shorter guards. Was pretty obvious from the Tommies tape. Glad we are finally using it.

More than anything, the hope is that this criticism dies with a new regime. It’s very obvious the last 6 years we have had a bottom third offensive approach in P5, and have zero creativity/adaptability. It is a full feature of this coaching tree, unfortunately.

Still a lot of season left. There will be at least one mid-major that wins 25-30 games and gets to the 2nd weekend that will warrant consideration.

Hopefully we consider Calhoun too

oh yeah a late riser for sure but Im skeptical of those hires. If they are good enough to be the UVA coach they should already be on the radar because of their already existing accomplishments.

Speaking of, Texas and NC State really regretting contracts given/extended after a hot run

Yeah I’m thinking Russ Turner, McCollum, Calhoun types that already have pretty legit resumes.

I do legitimately think we’re going to cast a wide net and pursue a lot of people. Highly doubt it’ll be a situation where we’re like “make a run at Byington, if he says no go hire Odom”

He’s never had the money John Scheyer has, what if ? I like his system…They compete and its fun to watch.
