šŸ€ Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

Does he say much on any of the boards frequent mentions for next coach? Like if there are other options for these guys if they leave their current school?

Private school plus Vandy doesn’t have a super robust beat reporting scene or anything. We need to get our reporters on it lol

lol - all falsities … they are trying to hang onto him as long as they can.
Unless you are talking about things different than what I heard??

I don’t want to put unverified Mountain Brook mom gossip about the man on a public forum, but I was shown some compelling circumstantial evidence.

Not to get off topic (or state the obvious) but we need a thorough background check on whomever we do hire. We can’t afford to get screwed by some skeleton in a closet we didn’t check.

Now that would be a sex scandal.

Seriously? Is this your worry about a new hire?

I think Pope Francis coached at some point. Plus, he is good with alumni and has experience with fundraising. #nobrainer

It’s a worry. I just know we are a school that would not have any tolerance for scandals. We wouldn’t just look the other way if something came up so it’s a real risk. I just want to make sure we avoid a Todd Golden situation. Golden built his team into a top 5-10 caliber program and nearly lost his job in the same season.

Dont think Shaka is really an option for us after getting his guy as the new AD there. Might use us to renegotiate his contract though

Yeah I think the Shaka dream died

Fun while it lasted. Now onto figuring out Byington’s buyout so we can kill that dream too.

Wait, I think i missed something. This guy Broeker was Shaka’s guy? Internal hire who he knows / prefers?

Mind if I expand on this and pepper in some other names and info?

Coaches we’d want but probably can’t get:

Shaka Smart, Marquette, 47, $2.25 million, current 2024-25 record: 15-3, Bracketology: 3-seed

Fred Hoiberg, Nebraska, 52, $4.25 million, current 2024-25 record: 12-6, Bracketology: Last Four In, 11-seed

Randy Bennett, Saint Mary’s, 62, $1.25 million, current 2024-25 record: 16-3, Bracketology: AQ, 9-seed

Rick Carlisle, Indiana Pacers, 65, $7.25 million

Will Hardy, Utah Jazz, 37, $4 million

Mick Cronin, UCLA, 53, $4.1 million, current 2024-25 record: 12-6, Bracketology: 9-seed

Coaches we’d want and possibly could get:

Mark Byington, Vanderbilt, 48, contract details unknown (paid Stackhouse $3.2 million) , current 2024-25 record: 15-3, Bracketology: Last Four Byes, 10-seed

Darian DeVries, West Virginia, 49, $2.8 million, current 2024-25 record: 13-4, Bracketology: 6-seed

Mike Rhoades, Penn State, 52, $3.7 million, current 2024-25 record: 13-6, Bracketology: Next Four Out

David Riley, Washington State, 36, $600K, current 2024-25 record: 15-5, Bracketology: n/a

Kyle Smith, Stanford, 55, $1.5 million, current 2024-25 record: 12-6, Bracketology: n/a

Backup options already rumored/connected:

Ryan Odom, VCU, 50, $1.7 million, current 2024-25 record: 14-4, Bracketology: Next Four Out

Mitch Henderson, Princeton, 49, contract details unknown (estimated $200K), current 2024-25 record: 14-4, Bracketology: n/a

Bob Richey, Furman, 41, contract details unknown (estimated $200K) , current 2024-25 record: 15-4, Bracketology: n/a

Under the radar guys worth keeping tabs on:
— tier 1 —

Jerrod Calhoun, Utah State, 43, $975K, current 2024-25 record: 16-2, Bracketology: 8-seed

Russell Turner, UC Irvine, 54, contract details unknown, current 2024-25 record: 17-2, Bracketology: AQ, 11-seed

Bryce Drew, Grand Canyon, 50, $1.375 million, current 2024-25 record: 13-5, Bracketology: n/a

— tier 2 —

Chris Gerlufsen, San Francisco, 48, contract details unknown (estimated $1.2 million), current 2024-25 record: 16-5, Bracketology: n/a

Bucky McMillan, Samford, 41, contract details unknown, current 2024-25 record: 15-4, Bracketology: 13-seed

Alan Huss, High Point, 46, contract details unknown, current 2024-25 record: 16-5, Bracketology: n/a

Niko Medved, Colorado State, 51, $1.7 million, current 2024-25 record: 11-7, Bracketology: n/a

Matt Langel, Colgate, 47, $520K, current 2024-25 record: 9-11, Bracketology: AQ, 16-seed

Luke Murray, UConn assistant, $400K, current 2024-25 record: 13-5, Bracketology: 6-seed

Probably would say yes but there’s a reason why:

Jeff Capel, Pitt, 49, $3.6 million, current 2024-25 record: 12-6, Bracketology: Last Four In, 11-seed

Wes Miller, Cincinnati, 41, $2.5 million, current 2024-25 record: 12-5, Bracketology: First Four Out

Porter Moser, Oklahoma, 56, $3.1 million, current 2024-25 record: 14-4, Bracketology: Last Four Byes, 10-seed

Mike White, Georgia, 47, $3.5 million, current 2024-25 record: 14-4, Bracketology: 8-seed

For the People That Know Things,

Interested in the process. Does Carla have unilateral control of this decision? Is there BOV input and/or ā€œSearch Committeeā€ input and they have a major role in the decision? I think that I understand that she has final approval, but I’m just wondering how much control she has over this?

I have no clue and it may have been covered already. Seems like with her new contract/extension, Carla will be motivated to make the ā€œsafeā€ hire vs. the ā€œgambleā€ hire.

It’s basically Odom then if Shaka is off the board?

Do you consider Byington off the board in this situation?

Do we even know who is on the board? Hahaa

LRA should be consulted for sure
