My guess is their pool will be different then ours.
Some key games today
Samford vs Furman 6pm ESPN+ (Richey vs Bucky, battle for top of conference)
WVU hosting Houston 7pm ESPN+
Loyola Chicago vs George Mason 7pm ESPN+ (Valentine vs Skinn. Trilly is really high on Valentine but Loyola Chicago decimated with injuries and heās probably Izzoās successor at MSU)
UNLV vs Calhoun and Utah St 10pm fs1
Iām not so sureā¦
The power conference guys like Otz and Oats have large enough buyouts that Iām not sure theyāre on the menu for even somewhere like UNC. I bet our pools are more similar than youād think.
Only data point I have for figuring out Byingtonās buyout is that Penn State paid Vandy 1.5 mil for hiring James Franklin after 3 years at Vandy. But that was over 10 years ago.
I found nothing about anything Pitt paid Vandy for Stallings in the news or on Pittās 990s, but Stallings had been at Vandy for a long time and they kinda wanted him to leave, so maybe there was no buyout.
Found nothing on Stackhouseās buyout for leaving since he was fired and thereās only reports of a range for the firing buyout.
Any other coaches leave Vandy for another school in any sport? Preferably a public school.
Anything short of $10M-ish buyout shouldnāt stop UVA from hiring a coach they really want in todayās environment. Statistically most new hires donāt work out. And that ends up costing you more in the long run.
For Byingtonā¦the success heās having this year at Vandy is what makes him hard to get.
Virginia - Miami 7pm on ESPNU (Ron Sanchez)
the first year guys might not work out (I think theyāre unlikely), but I would be surprised if the buyout is the gating item
TIL that buyout money a new employer pays to the former employer is included as income to the employee for tax purposes.
I still think we have a decent shot at Byington as a hometown return offer. His father passed away a few months ago and his mother is still living in Salem to my knowledge. I could really see him wanting to return closer to home, and its not like heād be taking a step down to do it.
I would think its easier to leave after 1 year than after a couple, and it doesnāt make sense for him to sign an extension with almost certain leverage coming in a couple months (and Iām also not sure they would offer him one after less than a year).
We should hire Jeff Capelā¦.
And, wait for itā¦
UNC should hire Jason Capel.
We would dominate the tv ratings
Just add a hypotax grossup to cover it in the contract.
My pick for the UNC job if it opens, which is a big ifā¦Scott Drew.
That 10 million of income tax bill at 40 percent gonna suck
Think so?
What is Odomās buyout at VCU.
On a budget/money saved Calhoun and Porter Moser would be the cheapest options right? (unless we go for like Bob Richey)
Iām an advocate for Shaka! If we get Capel, I will be getting free tickets!
Not like I know anythingā¦just looking at his team there, it would be a good time to move if he wants and could get that type of job. My guess is the only way UNC makes a change is if they already know they have an A lister lined up.
Wow, didnāt realize how much Baylor is set to lose from this yearās team. They return maybe 2-3 guys from their 9-man rotation before factoring transfers out? And they have only one 2025 commit?
Jokes about the ābourbon cultureā aside, Iām not sure why he would take UNC but not Kentucky last year. By all accounts, UNC NIL is a bit behind the times, to put it generously. Slightly less rabid fan base, but the expectations and blue blood insanity are still there.
Ultimately I think Hubert hangs on for one more year, but heās basically pre-fired for next year.
Good pointā¦I assume Drew could have gotten the Kentucky job, his name came up. I donāt buy UNC having NIL problems. Have heard talk about organizational issues or whatever. But they just won a bidding war with UK for Caleb Wilson.
UNC is caught in a little bit of no manās land operating in this new terrain. They seem to want to be Duke, bring in HS studs and only use the portal to supplement. Fits the brand better, and the old school money people probably see that as cleaner or whatever. So while theyāve gotten a few good transfers, they havenāt gone in the deep end.
As for Drewā¦itās kind of gone the other way at Baylor. Theyāve shelled out for the top shelf guysā¦basically living on 1&doners and 7-figure transfers the past few years. The result has been good teams but none a threat to get back to the F4. His elite teams were blue collar guys, teams that were built the old fashioned way.
