We go at least 5-2 next 7 … I will back Ron for head coach.

If we go 5-2 or better, re-purpose the cash and buy a few key ballers.

I have Ohio State as a 9 seed in my latest bracketolgy. NET of 26 coming in to today. .500 in the 2nd best league in the country. I think our definitions of mediocre may be different. I think we forget pre Tony, OHio States current season was above average for us. I would love to find a coach that can reproduce what the last decade produced under Tony. But Tony is a unicorn and a HOFer. Chances of our next hire being on that level are low.

We’re getting close here, guys… another 4,000 comments and we’re gonna solve this riddle, I can feel it!

Gotta admit … I like our new offense = shoot the first open shot vs squeeze the life out of the ball. I also like our offense against shitty defenses.

Was mentioned on in game thread but man Ish gotta shoot that when he brings it up and is not guarded.

Also hope Ishan doesnt get sorta trapped into being ā€œjust a shooterā€. Feel like he has more to his game than just shooting

Interesting thing is that the whole coaching carousel started because an incoming ACC team (SMU) poached the coach of an incoming B10 team (USC). Then that B10 team poached an SEC team (Arkansas), then we had SEC on SEC violence (Arkansas vs. Kentucky). And then that SEC team struck out with a B12 coach (Baylor) and a Big East one (Connecticut), and wound up with a guy from the B12 with no career NCAAT wins.

I guess the point with that particular carousel is that an individual school’s money and resources probably matter more than the conference’s.

This is silly. Who did Dook hire for their last coach? Kentucky? UNC? UCLA? Indiana? The list goes on. Very rarely do the most successful coaches change jobs - and when they do it is usually because they’re worried about getting canned (read Calipari). It’s been 10+ years since highly successful coaches job hopped. Cal to Kentucky was the last I can think of, and Tony Bennett was arguably one of the last times prior to that. Times have changed:

We need to identify who we think will climb to the top of the ranks while leading the Hoos. That means taking a bet on someone (unless we somehow convince Shaka to come here). That doesn’t make us a worse program. It just is how the market works nowadays.

Eric Musselman just last year. A S16 and two E8s in the four years there were NCAA tournaments during his Arkansas tenure. I’d define that as highly successful.

I’d be ok with keeping him at 5-2 as long as the AD does it’s due diligence in making sure that is the best option available

As a guy that would like a new chapter, I can see a scenario where 5-2 does it for Ron- especially if it includes a Duke win at home. That and 1-1 in the acct would end the year at 18-15.

I think the path for him to be retained is 1) the home run options say no ; 2) 18+ wins ; 3) in the above, the admin is basically deciding between Ron and Odom, and feels more comfortable with the guy they know.

Plus Buzz Williams, Shaka Smart, Rick Pitino (albeit under unusual circumstances). You can say Mick Cronin came from a mid-major to UCLA, but it was a much stronger mid-major than JMU or VCU, and he had been there 12 years and taken them to nine straight NCAA tournaments.

I’m not saying Odom or Byington would be bad choices. I’m saying that the fact we think they’re the best realistic choices means our program is not as attractive as we’d like to think it is.

Odom and Byington are Oates at Buffalo/Dan Hurley at Rhode Island hires imo.

We’re not going to go 5-2 so it’s kind of moot. I’m happy for Ron and the guys that we have some happy moments but I still think it would likely be a big mistake to run it back. The program badly needs a fresh perspective and some new juice. I just don’t think that happens under Ron, even if he says all the right things about making the program his not just repeating what was done under Tony.

Additionally I think one of the benefits of retaining an Interim HC is roster stability. I’m not convinced that happens if we retain Ron. I think in any scenario we’re going to be looking to fill a brand new roster. I don’t think Ron will be as successful doing that as someone new.

If all of the younger guys continue to play well and you told me they love Ron and want to stay, that’s a relevant consideration. I just don’t think that’s true.

Gonna bring back these tweets. Both Byington and Odom have won NCAA tournament games at much more difficult places to win.

I’m Sellington and Overom.

Yeah some of the best ā€œjobsā€ have hired guys who had 0 HC experience or didn’t come from other P4-5 jobs.

Duke - Scheyer
UNC - Davis
UCLA - Cronin
Nova - Neptune
Cuse - Autry
Louisville - Payne, then Kelsey
Indiana - Woodson
Kentucky - Pope
UConn - Hurley
Florida - Golden

The only recent P4/5 hires were all guys who were feeling pressure from their existing school
Arkansas - Calipari
USC - Musselman
Georgia - White
SMU - Enfield

Fun fact: 3 of the top 5 teams currently are coached by guys that were fired by other P5 programs.

And the best one out of this group currently is Golden, another mid Major guy who never won an NCAA tournament.
