2.5 over/under for the last 7.

4-3 finish would put us at 16-15. Would have to win a few games in the ACC tournament to entertain retaining him imo.

Tony’s quit your job voodoo was so effective that it worked on him too.

I think we get 3. 3-4 rest of the way.

If we lose to Tech Sat it’s all moot imo

Last time was 2019 when a 14-20(!) West Virginia team played.

That would put us 9-11 probably somewhere from 8-11 i the standings? For me he would have to at minimum be playing Thursday to have a shot and Friday realistically. All speculation lets see how they do Saturday. A loss especially one that isnt down to the wire and we are back to Ron is definitely gone territory.

I can’t root against the Hoos, especially against VT, but this will be the easiest to stomach L of my life if that’s how it goes.

I’m ready for a change and frankly don’t even want retaining Ron to be something the powers that be are even entertaining as an option when the time comes to move

The NIT invites are gonna be weird this year because the ACC (and SEC) has 2 guaranteed bids, which was a response to that new postseason tournament that has guaranteed spots for the Big 12, Big Ten, Big East teams.

Little Richard would let us see Gertrude play…in the annual Pittino game.

If we go 6-1, Ron can have the job. Problem is we’re not going 6-1.

Rodney Terry. Hubert Davis, Kevin Keatts. All guys who made the tournament and went on elite 8/final 4 runs that their programs are now regretting they went on.

We aren’t even on track to make the NIT.

Nate Mason, Marcus Carr, Jaelyn House, and now Donovan Dent. He’s done a good job finding successful lead guards through one avenue or another.

Yeah I think Richard is attractive from a talent acquisition standpoint. Only concern is whether he’d have any issues getting his guys into UVA.

I mean, I’d take him over any candidate who willfully spent six years as an assistant in Blacksburg, which should be an automatic disqualifier for any potential UVa coach (poor judgment and lifestyle choices).

Don’t know if he buried the lede so I missed it, but in a quick scan I did not see any evidence that he is picking up support. I saw that the team is playing better. That’s about it.

You’re right, there is nothing whatsoever in the article about him ā€œpicking up supportā€. The article is just Jerry making a case on Ron’s behalf.

I find it interesting to see that some people approach this coaching search as a two-step process:

Step 1: Should Ron keep the job?
Step 2: If no, who’s the best candidate out of everyone else?

(As opposed to the one-step process: ā€œWho’s the best candidate out of everyone (which does include Ron and does factor in his incumbency and continuity benefits)?ā€)

What I don’t get about the 2-step process is, what exactly is the thinking in Step 1? How do you answer ā€œShould Ron keep the jobā€ if not by comparing him to all other candidates (i.e. the one-step process)?

In any case, Jerry seems to be doing the two-step. He talks about Ron entirely in a vacuum. And some of his commenters saying things like ā€œRon deserves the jobā€ā€¦ again I don’t even understand what that means. (And I say all this as someone who’s far more sympathetic to hiring Ron than most of you are.)

I don’t understand how fanbases and ADs make this mistake over and over and over again, but when you hire a coach for millions of dollars, you should not base that decision on the most recent ten games (or even the most recent season). That’s how you get Kevin Keatts. You decide based on entire coaching career, based on record. Does the candidate win? Can they adapt? Have they shown consistent success at multiple spots? Or are high risk/high reward?

But constantly I see entire programs stepping on rakes because they need someone who ā€œunderstands their cultureā€ or someone who ā€œwill help them retain X playerā€ or because ā€œhe went on a run at the end of the season and we couldn’t say ā€˜no.ā€™ā€

What are we even talking about here? UVA is looking for its next great coach. Based on how conferences are shaking out, this coach may well help to shape all of UVA’s sports future. It is not hyperbole to say that hundreds of millions of dollars are on the line over the next decade or two.

5-2 in the next 7 games? In an absolutely terrible ACC? That’s our metric? That’s what we’re going to bet the future of UVA sports on? 5-2?

I have no personal issue with Ron. He seems like a good guy. And if you always thought he was the next great hire, then I understand why you’d still defend him - because you were always operating on a longer evaluation of him. That’s fine. I have no beef with you. But if you were on the fence before, and a 5-2 finish brings you over to him… I just don’t know, man.

I also see a lot of:

  • Ron didn’t get a fair chance (every interim needs two upper class lottery picks before you can definitively say he’s not going to be a good coach)
  • Every hire is inherently risky and Ron is risky, so I’m going to not do any further relative comparisons (I’m equally opposed to potato sack races and taking a barrel over Niagara Falls, both of which might cause injury)

Unrelated tangential point:
I think there’s a lot of:

  • pent up love and respect for the Bennett era and feeling that it’s all ending too soon. That’s good! (The feeling of love and respect, that is)
  • Disappointment that this will be the end of the road for several players we’ve gotten to know and most of the staff we’ve known and loved (and Soddie). That’s a very human reaction!

I feel both of those, too, but I don’t think you hire a meh coach because of it…
