That said, we have a front court thatās very promising as itās currently constructed and could return in itās entirety next year. What would win me over with Ron is getting a plug and play all-conference quality lead guard and/or scoring wing.
Anyone who likes Cofie and is excited about his future at UVa (and Iām 100 percent in that camp) should be pulling for Ron to get the job (and Iām in that camp also).
picking a coach based on keeping him ? That doesnāt pass the laugh test
assuming heās tied to Ron Sanchez? Maybe, but itās an odd assumption and a pretty thin reed on which to make such a major decision
My basic theory : if, at the time we have to make the decision, we think Ron is really good along multiple dimensions, then we should keep him.
I like Jacob Cofie! A lot! But does he crack the top 5? 10?
(This has high āI know we were all mixed on Ron, but we kept him and that means the young guys will stay! [A week or two passes; one or more young guys donāt stay] āI know we were mixed on Ron and I know the young guys didnāt stay but [new rationalization]ā potential, thatās all Iām saying)
Itās too early for me to say I want Ron to stay but I definitely do Cofie . I assume Ron recruited him but are they that close that he would leave if Ron doesnāt get the job?
Ron needs to earn the job based on the results he delivers with this roster. Period. Not suggesting anything else.
But itās naive to not understand that Cofieās going portalling if Ronās let go. Thatās a lock. Could a new coach convince him to stay? Maybe. But Iād call it highly, highly doubtful.
To stick with your actual words, I like Cofie, but more importantly I like UVa hoops, and because I do, I will not be pulling for Ron to get the job.
I continue to pull for UVa to win every game, and if that happens the rest of the way, Ron will get the job. And that will be good, right? Letās agree on that.
Pull for whatever you want. Iām not trying to influence anyone in that regard and Iāll be quick to jump off the Ron bandwagon if need be.
And thatāll happen sooner than later if I keep seeing Rohde playing point guard for 30 minutes per game.
But anyone who thinks there wonāt be significant roster turnover with a new coach is delusional. And of the guys on our roster, Iād put the odds of Cofie being gone as easily the highest given his talent level and NIL upside, where heās from, and that Ron was instrumental in his recruitment.
If itās not Ron, there will be significant roster turnover
If it is Ron, there will probably be significant roster turnover. (Others might say likely or maybe instead of probably. I wouldnāt quibble with either of those, but my own view is probably)
I think youāll find if the team has a good enough year that Sanchez gets the job, theyāll mostly stay intactā¦at least the key pieces. Itās a chicken-egg situation. Players wonāt necessarily stay just because heās the head coachā¦it will be because things are going well with him as head coach.
Based on Tonyās last few years: guys who are happy with their role or see that role expanding, (or are just content to stay for reasons unrelated to hoops) will almost certainly stay. Guys who arenāt, will not.
Based on situations where the HOF coach leaves a month before the season, but the interim does well enough to stick around, the data suggests that ⦠[error, not enough data, certainly not in the portal era].
Is this now a āQuibble Challengeā? Throughout Coach Bennettās tenure, players have transferred out of the program. In all but a few instances, it was because they saw no clear path to future playing time, or they saw the likely possibility of diminished playing time. From Billy Baron to K.T. Harrell to James Johnson to Paul Jesperson to Taylor Barnette to Mariel Shayok to Jarred Reuter to Darius Thompson to Marco Anthony to Justin McKoy to Casey Morsell to Carson McCorkle to Leon Bond. There have been a few other transfers for other reasons (Spurlock, Regan, Traudt, Abdur-Rahim, & Milicic), but playing time, present or future, has been the primary motivation to leave. And, this hasnāt been a huge problem. Losing players who arenāt in the primary rotation isnāt that damaging to the program, and it frees up scholarships. However, when coaches leave, the uncertainty of future roles becomes a major issue. This has been exacerbated with the new transfer rules. Weāve seen entire rosters transfer with coaching changes at other programs. IMO, the best chance to maintain some stability in the program which Coach Bennett built is that Coach Sanchez succeed this year and have the āinterimā removed from his title. I suspect if he goes, thereās going to be a complete rebuild, and Iām not confident of a quick turnaround.
The one that is the exception to the rule, with Hauser graduating and Murphy going pro he was in line to start but he left anyways (we didnāt chase Gardner until after McKoy left). Maybe bad blood over the COVID positive ruining our postseason, maybe bitter over having his sophomore year wasted because Tony recruited over him with transfers. Either wayā¦
Iāve watched Virginia replace six basketball head coaches. In three instances, the coach resigned/retired (although I imagine Hoot Gibson had seen the handwriting on the wall), and three times the head coach was fired. I imagine in each case, the AD was trying to hire the best possible replacement. IMO, it has always been a crap shoot. There are so many positives about Coach Sanchez, that he seems to be far less of a risk than a new head coach. Maintaining the continuity of the program seems the most likely path to success, IMO.
I guess Iām not as in love with this roster as others, to go ahead and say itās worth keeping Sanchez because it gives us a chance to realistically keep it 60-75% intact at best. Sanchez should be part of the search obvs, but if there is an upside candidate I think itās a no brainer. Unless of course Ron smashes expectations.
It aint even fair with you sir. Young dudes here never even heard of Jeff Jones and you are comin with Hoot Gibson hoo proly didnt even have an 3 point line
