Is his Minnesota tenure is getting better with age? Wondering what local Minnesota correspondent @tlgoudy has to say.

I’d be a little hesitant to hire based on success at GCU. Definitely a win at all costs program. As good as Drew has been there the success might not translate here.

You could put together a not terrible list based on guys who’ve beaten us in the tourney:

  • Izzo (ok, probably not)
  • Mike White (nah, but it might not be crazy, and has a decent chance to go to the tourney this year)
  • odom (legit contender)
  • Boals (haven’t heard his name; was well regarded as of a year or so ago)
  • Richey (someone in another thread said he’s not known for his pleasant personality)
  • Medved (interesting; I’ve always assumed he’s likely for Minnesota if they make a move)

Whoa! Dawn is no joke, but if at the end of the year we are looking for a new coach we do not need to be that progressive. MBB is our premier revenue sport. Hiring from the Women’s game would be WAY too experimental for my taste. The transition from WBB to MBB could possibly work for someone like Coach Staley, but there needs to be a track record of success in the men’s game before you get a power 4 job.

Sorry @WFS_HOO for keeping this topic alive. my bad

Richard couldn’t keep the local talent at home. Suggs had some comment that kinda buried him (felt ignored ; wanted to stay home)

I think Otz had a really sterling rep in the biz, despite a meh 2 year run at UCLA.

I think this exercise is drawing me over to the HGN position that Mike Rhoades would be a really good hire relative to the realistic candidates. Maybe people turn their nose up at the bad offense, but at least he’s demonstrably elite at putting together a defense, as opposed to these candidates that require a little wishcasting to think they will be elite at something.

I think he was too young and inexperienced for the Minnesota job at the time. He was 31 with 1 year at FIU.

I don’t think the 3 years at New Mexico have rehabilitated the 8 years at Minnesota. Best conference record is 10-8 tied for 6th. Only made the NCAAs cause they won the conference tournament.

Rhoads is a good coach. He’s Shaka lite similar to Sanchez being Tony lite. I would like to see a little more of what he does at PSU.

Nope. Watched him at VCU and meh. Why not get a coach who has a better offense. I am done with rock fights

Fair. Who do you like as a candidate, then?

Probably a reason for that

That’s where I am on Rhoades. Don’t love it / don’t hate it. Let’s see how he does with his current team, which seems to have some guard talent at least

Ryan Odom

That’s a really good list for the past 20+ years.

I like what Odom has been able to do at a variety of places. Obviously UMBC stings but to go out to Utah State and have success in a very different place is impressive to me. Plus he is a guy who grew up around our program.

I would be very interested in that brain trust around UConn. I don’t think we get Hurley, but most of the people I know that keep up with the Huskies love Murray.

Obviously you make a call to Shaka as well, but he is a Wisconsin guy. Doubt you could get him to leave Marquette.

I am generally nervous about hiring others’ star assistants. I remember when Luke Yaklich was a buzzy name for his work as an assistant at Michigan and Texas, and he just finished up a bad 4 years at UIC by way of being shown the door.

Some recent successes though: The guy at AZ. Tang. Mccasland (maybe). Some other drew assistant I’m forgetting
