šŸ€ Next Basketball Head Coach Speculation Thread

Every in state team should play every other in-state team in the pre-season. It’s natural and Old School. It benefits us and our state. My dad was playing against those great Cincinnati team players in high school and all throughout college. You guys remember the Big O. My dad played him in the eighth or ninth grade for the first time. You might remember Jerry Lucas too.

There were some great players and I think you should play in-state in high school and in College for the preseason. We should probably play William and Mary and Richmond and JMU and VCU every year. That’s better than Campbell and Coppin state in my opinion.

This will probably get pushed back on me from the people who think that driving from Virginia to Philadelphia is normal. Love the passion, but we should be playing some in-state schools right now. Unless we can go and play the big boys in a preseason tourney somewhere awesome. See below:

I advocate for entering any big national tournament and an exotic location no matter what. Great Alaskan shootout. Maui invitational. The Bahamas conch fest whatever it’s called now. Go play. I would rather play Michigan State in November and see how good we are then play Coppin State in November.

I’m old-school, but if we played all the in-state schools instead of Campbell and Coppin State, we would be better off.

Also- Fuck Bass Tech.

We played in the The Richmond-Times Dispatch tourney for like 2 or 3 years. It’s was close to Charlottesville and offered good competition. We also hit the Great Alaskan Shootout which was a long drive from Charlottesville- I kid I kid.

We had a great time. It was cold as shit, but we got to do some fun stuff, including dog sledding. I need to go get my pictures and post them. I do remember Crotty and I were on a dog sled ride and we saw a moose like an hour north of Anchorage or something like that. That’s the last Moose I saw except for the Pi Phi I took to my formal sophomore year. She was nice and a good dancer - I swear.

RTD Tourney had good teams the Great Alaskan Shootout was awesome and I think we lost in the finals to UCLA. Also a bunch of other good teams.

It was a good cultural experience for everyone involved. So either play locally in your state or go somewhere exotic. That’s my take.

Its interesting as a Virginia person I have no interest in playing the in state schools. I didnt like it in HS when i was in Virginia i didnt get hyped to see VCU or richmond and I thoguht george mason was a community college until they made the final 4.

That might just be me but those game do nothing for me. I think Virginia does well enough sprinkling in a few here and there but I dont need more than 1 a year.

Most really good teams won’t play the instate schools because they look at it as nothing to gain and possibly a lot to lose

I’m not sure why they don’t schedule in-state teams more…like Hav said, that used to be the norm. UVA has gone out of their way to schedule occasional homes and homes under TB…and paid the price losing a couple times. JMU, ODU, VCU…didn’t Mason get us once? But I don’t understand why they wouldn’t show a preference toward W&M, Hampton, etc for the buy games instead of the Campbells. Maybe they do, I don’t know. We have played those teams once in a while.

They did, beat us in the 2013 season opener.

From what I remember Teven Jones and Jontel Evans were both out and we had no PG.

George Washington got us too

My last year we actually went TO William and Mary to play. They had a really good freshman PG I fake tried to fight and they took us to OT

Their entire football team was on the first 10 rows or whatever and going after us. Was a great basketball atmosphere, almost like HS game.

They proly out played us really but we were too good

Didn’t there use to be a four team event at U Hall too? I’m thinking it was something like the Central Fidelity Classic.

They might have stopped playing it right before Hav and Fresh started playing.

We had one tournament in UHall my first year to start the season yes. Zero clue what it was called. I was a dang first year so had no clue what was going on then!

The tournament was called the United Virginia Bank Classic, and it was played on Friday and Saturday nights of Thanksgiving weekend. It was started under Coach Holland, and I cannot remember Virginia ever losing it. Back then, those were also the first games of the season.

Also, note that OOC games were scheduled throughout the season. Admittedly, the conference schedule was just 14 games back then, but still…

Yea. Real good Louisville team cane to UHall. Am sure you remember that one

Also funny how Virginia seemed to always play Houston. Maybe Coach Holland had some connection there?

Yup. We had some inexplicably bad losses that year
