No I think he meant Wisconsin was offering Tony a lighter work load as a coach with a GM to help him navigate and what not.

Also wrong

We already have the mentor in place with Wally Walker. Would think an associate NBA GM would be a good choice. At this point college sports is professional sports and the infrastructure should be similar. Great point @superhelix

Obviously we should hire Anthony Poindexter

I heard it’s already a done deal.

I actually really like Richard, but as a coach he was a little frustrating. Very engaging and awesome with the media. I think New Mexico is perfect for him and he should continue to do great there, but I wouldn’t put him at the top of my list. I assume and hope he’ll get another chance at a high major, but my preference is not at Virginia.

Yeah I’m actually happy to see Young Dracula have success at New Mexico but have my doubts about whether or not he’d work here.

Nobody can keep top Minnesota talent in Minnesota. NIL is pretty weak so now the chances are even slimmer. What Minnesota is really good at is the boomerang players that leave and then come back.

Oats, Drew, Shaka - my list. Rationale - John Wooden is older than 55.

The biggest issue with GM positions is that most coaches are control freaks. Pro coaches are usually forced to have GMs. I don’t think Tony is too different here (streaming B/W, orange unis, whatever). Sanchez even had a quote pointing to this mentality.

I don’t remember the exact question and answer, but it was something like: ā€œHave you redistributed any of your previous responsibilities now that you’re in charge?ā€ ā€œNo. Why would I stop doing things I’m good at?ā€

Exactly. Which is why I’m not that sympathetic with some of the burnout stuff.

Be less of a control freak and you’ll be less burnt out.

As the college game professionalizes, it makes perfect sense to me that the P5 programs add a GM type role to their organizations to take more of the money negotiations and recruiting responsibilities off the Head Coach’s plate. It should be a partnership between the GM and the HC. It’s going to work differently at every school and for every team, based on personalities, strengths, etc., but this does not seem like an impossible problem to solve. This is simply an adaptation of the management layer to the changing landscape of college sports.

Agree 100%. Need a pro framework for coach/management for college hoops as it is moving to professional framework. And we need structure on NIL caps, etc just like pros

I kinda assumed John Becker was one of those guys who was happy in his specific lane and wise enough to not mess with it, but he’s certainly been very successful at Vermont.

Yeah, odd inclusion

Seems like the next Rick Byrd. Good coach.
