As always, my crystal ball is broken, but I donāt see collective bargaining coming to college hoops anytime soon.
Thereās so many steps from here to there, some of which seem less likely than they did in the recent past
Maybe the House settlement eventually morphs into something that has some restrictions around how players move. Heck, maybe it does already. Weāll know if/when it finally gets approved!
Yeah. I was disappointed to see the House settlement make it past the judge the 2nd time. Its clearly an effort by the NCAA to logroll a bunch of stuff into a settlement to avoid collective bargaining.
Iām still betting against the NCAAā¦they should have just gone all in years ago on athletes as employees + CBA. I still think they will fail to avoid it eventually.
Bennett didnāt care much for NIL either, especially the last year or two when itās gotten out of control, but yeah I agree that he hated the portal more. And itās easy to say just pick high school recruits better and donāt use it, but thatās not very realistic. Even if you hit at a high rate, youāre still at a disadvantage if you donāt use the portal to upgrade every year because everybody else will.
I think his main objection to it was just that itās not how college sports should be, not necessarily a selfish thing. But it did hurt him. The way he did things isnāt very compatible with one-year players, which is the best way to maximize the portal. So even if and when they used the portal well, it didnāt benefit his teams as much as it does others.
This isnāt black or white. Use the portal to add 1ā¦maybe 2ā¦players each year. Build the foundation from high school, even if it requires a NIT year to reset things (we are likely doing that this year anyway).
Both national championship teams last year built their roster that way. Shaka is doing it at Marquette. Gonzaga is playing only 2 new transfers this year and looks as good as anyone so farā¦
Edit: there seems to be 2 ways to win now ā (1) Be among the biggest NIL budget in town and build through the portal on a 2 year horizon; (2) Be a developmental program and try to build through high school recruiting on a 2-4 year horizon while only supplementing with the portal. No successful teams are remaking their roster every year.
Random (likely bad) idea : conferences get the NCAA $$ right? And decide how to divvy it out?
Maybe conferences can get into the pay game? Someone somewhere needs to realize thereās value in some stability / watching guys grow. Something like, ACC gives increasing payments to guys who stick around longer.
Like, anyone who played 200 minutes for any ACC school in the prior season, gets a June 1 payment the following year, if theyāre still at the same school. If you canāt prevent guys from moving, then provide a counterweight.
Been a broken record on this, but fans care most about the amorphous but real āconnection to the school.ā As that gets broken, the value of college sports degrades (IMO).
Really, even if he went hard after high school recruits, they are as likely as not to portal out if they are not seeing the pt that they were hoping/expecting. With Tonyās penchant for valuing experience (should there happen to be anyone on the squad with experience), they might not have the patience (or they might be hoping to be courted 4 times during their college career).
Maybe we need to have one of our many coaches tasked to play matchmaker to make sure these guys fall in love right away when they get here.
Yeah I just hate that it wonāt be available to quickly switch back and forth. I avoid using the espn app whenever possible. itās awful. First world problems haha
Itās kinda random. Youād think the schools wouldāve checked to make sure they could get a decent network for that game. It was probably the only date that fit, I guess, now that there are 37 conference games, plus MTEs, plus conference challenge games.
Or he saw UNC is 4-3 and likely to drop another tomorrow⦠in all seriousness I feel like heās the least likely of the actual potential candidates here. Just donāt see it happening.
