šŸ—ŗ Potential ACC Expansion & Conference Realignment

Sometimes I feel like the only one who understands that uva joining the sec means permanent, incurable, not ever not going to happen, not even a little bit of a chance of ever not happening doormat status in football. Congrats, your restaurants will be packed with various versions of Hokies in town to enjoy stomping our pathetic football team into the ground. Enjoy.

So a normal Saturday but with profits?

Would so much rather see a bunch of Georgia and ole miss fans around Cville than penn state and Michigan. SEC is just as good or better in basketball and way better in baseball. Not sure how it’s even a debate from a sports perspective

I far prefer membership in the BIG.

First, I think people are underestimating the intensity of the BIG fan base (Ohio State v. Michigan?). I’ve seen Iowa v Wisconsin and Iowa v Michigan and it’s incredible.

The second point relates to academics and academic reputation which is far more important to me and the value of my degree. I recently attended a conference at the University of Arkansas. Absolutely top notch athletics facilities and pristine fraternity and sorority houses with multiple academic buildings in obvious disrepair. That’s not the case with all SEC schools, but it projects an image of ā€œsemi professional sports franchise that offers classes on the side ā€œ.

I voted my desire (SEC) but I think (B1G).

Thought it would be an interesting poll since the fans here seem to be pretty divided. And FWIW, I’d prefer either over staying in the ACC as it crumbles.

No.

If forced to pick between the two, I’d say ā€œWhy? What kind of psychopath would force someone to make that choice?ā€

And if you’d say, but c’mon, it’s just for fun, I’d say ā€œFun? You find this fun?ā€

Amen to that!

The VT 247 board has been entertaining reading for the past couple of days after reports came out that 5 schools, including UVA, were opposed to adding Stanford and Cal. Some angst about how if VT didn’t oppose the expansion that they may not have a secure P2 landing spot, to certainty that it really was VT that opposed the expansion and not UVA, and bewilderment as to why either P2 conference would be more interested in UVA over them. Here is just one post:

Haha. Someone is infatuated with UVa there

VT meet Big 12,
Big 12 meet VT…
we think you might enjoy each others company.

I share the sports dislike that you all have for VPI, and one outlet I personally enjoy having for that sports dislike is to actually play them in sports in regularly scheduled conference games. It seems logical to me, yet for some reason it seems to be a bit of a minority opinion…

I also enjoyed my sports dislike of the Terps, and I personally find our conference less fun now that I can no longer enjoy that particular dislike as much.

Same with Duke. I sports hate Duke! They are the sports worst (and sometimes just plain old worst). But I don’t sports hate them so much that I don’t want to play them. That’s the part of this realignment fanboy-ing that doesn;t make sense to me. Some of you are making this realignment thing like a game where we win or lose and therefore ā€œbeatā€ our rivals, when (spoiler alert) – this is a game where everyone can be worse off.

BIG has more prestigious schools and it isn’t even close. Historically, SEC is better in football and baseball. BIG is better in soccer and basketball.

Yeah, feel like a lot of folks will disagree with you on that one, but I’m largely in the same camp. Rivalries are good. Realignment killing regularly scheduled rivalry games is one of the worst things about it (see Kansas-Missouri, for example).

If we end up in different conferences, I certainly hope we still play VT every year in every sport. And also, I’d like to play Maryland regularly if we end up in the BIG. I hated them so much, but that’s what made it entertaining to play them.

It’s not just the big rivalries, either, it’s to a lesser extent the little ones too. Teams like GT, Clemson, NC State, and Wake aren’t our rivals, but we nevertheless do have a (multi-sport) history between us that adds a lot to my appreciation of those programs and matchups. I’m never gonna have the same interest in Ohio State. Which is why if we move, I’m hoping we bring along as many ACC teams as possible, or find a way to ā€œkeep in touchā€ on the court/field, every now and then anyway.

They can’t face the truth because they can’t even admit UVa is the flagship university. And THAT is the most important factor. Stanford is not a public school, let alone the California flagship

And that the UVA buzz isn’t coming from UVA fans. It’s coming from every media member who reports on college sports. Only hope they really have is that it’s all one big echo chamber

I mean we played VT out of conference for a loooong time before they joined the ACC. See no reason that wouldn’t continue. And we would have a leg up in the engagement for once! Having seen UVA beat VPI twice since I’ve been old enough to remember (I’m almost 30) I am really hoping for that scenario. Could double the victories I’ve witnessed in 2 years

Once we join the SEC, Cal won’t have much of a choice.
