Nelly Oleson was the greatest villain of my childhood
For those too young to remember, Nellie was basically Lucius Malfoy of the prairie. And her mom was Draco. Her dad was cool though. Whipped but cool
Anyway, conference realignmentâŠ
Once the call started, it became clear that would not be the case. No official vote was taken. In straw polling, the fourth school opposed was NC State, according to multiple sources.
Six other schools had discussions with Florida State about the grant of rights and charting a path forward: Clemson, Miami, Virginia, Virginia Tech, North Carolina and NC State.
What was certain was there were votes in favor of expansion (Notre Dame, Wake Forest, Louisville, Miami, Georgia Tech) and votes opposed (Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina) and swing votes in between.
Some good tidbits in here about power dynamics and blocs and considerations. Worth the read.
I find it interesting that Miami was a yes on expansion (not an on-the-fencer like most). Shows that the so-called Magnificent Seven arenât necessarily the 7 most wanting to get out. Theyâre maybe the most proactive in looking for solutions, doesnât mean theyâre all agreed on what to do though.
Even if all 6 of the on-the-fencers voted in favor, to make this happen theyâd still need to get a yes vote from one of the 4 previous no votes: Clemson, FSU, UNC, NC State. Maybe the sweetener is the conference agrees to unequal revenue distribution? Otherwise I donât see how any of those schools flip.
Iâd hope we would flip to no if they did unequal distribution
youâre not doing a revote unless you think you have the votes to accept them.
Which of these schools is most likely to vote in favor of adding Cal & Stanford?
- Clemson
- Florida State
- North Carolina
- NC State
I would have voted none of the above but chose from the 4 available
I did that deliberately
I am thoroughly confused by the whole thing, but Iâd peg the odds at, in order:
- no vote at all
- Vote to accept, with only 2 no-votes
- Unanimous vote to accept
Not sure why, but I donât think we see a squeaker (but in this poll, fwiw, I voted NC State). Also should add, I think a vote to accept with just Clemson and FSU voting against, is not a good fact. That would mean the ACCâs two biggest earners (to use Sopranos jargon) are not committed to the future of the league, and the rest of the league is willing to publicly show they donât care.
I voted UNC, but if itâs true that NC State is just doing whatever UNC says⊠then the odds are identical.
Mostly though I have absolutely no clue.
I wonder if having them join as football only members is something that is on the table. Basically a reverse Notre Dame and a lower revenue share. Would solve the travel issues and still maybe benefit all parties?
Cal and Stanford would just have to find a home for all of their other sports (Big West? Mountain West?). Would probably be a major blow to those sports, but what other options do they have?
No idea if thatâs on the table or even feasible, but I kinda like it, and it may help lead to the break-up of football and hoops, which might be good⊠(or, it might be bad).
ACC adding Stanford and Cal would be really lame and provide minimal benefit. Itâs such a sad, desperate attempt to avoid admitting defeat in the conference arms race. A panic move void of any real thought beyond âbigger is betterâ
Theyâll do like all the west coast nfl teams do on an east coast back to back and stay and the Greenbrier for two weeks.
This is how I feel about most ideas people have about conference realignment.
