On a semi-related note, if yāall havenāt seen the Francisca Gino story, itās one for the ages:
It hilarious to me that both schools actually started their statements with āWe are awareā¦ā
Good. Glad you guys are able to keep up.
And Dan Ariely at Duke caught in similar/identical fraud allegations
Indeed. Ariely was a collaborator of Ginoās on one of the seemingly fraudulent papers: [109] Data Falsificada (Part 1): "Clusterfake" - Data Colada
Florida State just had a big research falsification scandal as well. It seems like thereās no integrity anymore; everyone just chasing money in both sports and research grants.
Hairbrained idea but what if the ACC just took on Cal and Stanford (or arranged a ND type agreement with them)? Cal is kind of a poison pill for the revenue sports but at least is a top notch institution. Hold off the big10 super conference from forming for a few years.
The new ACC would still stink at football but completely dominate womenās swimming and soccer ā¦
Iām curious how does Notre Dame s media take compare to the Big Ten and SEC if anybody knows. They have their own NBC deal and I assume they get some kind of ACC cut on top.
If I have it right, they make $17M from the ACC and $22M from their NBC deal.
They were looking for $75M when the deal expires in 2025 but landscape has changed since that number has been thrown around.
Edit: hereās an article but I think this doesnāt count non-football revenue.
So what i hear from many fans is that the SEC and Big Expansions are creating some strange bedfellows and some games that many fans are not interested in. I think the league that does not sell its soul to the devil can survive in the long run. Fans are gonna always be drawn to rivalries. Think of Army Navy. Who is gonna watch Oregon Rutgers over Army Navy?
The ACC could add the service academies plus West Virginia and create eyeballs on the TV. All the great service academy rivalries plus hot rivalries between WVU, UVA, VT, and Pitt. That would allow the ACC to leapfrog the Big 12 immediatly.
Gamblers will watch.
I like the idea of adding Army and Navy. It would be a pretty shrewd move for a conference that is stuck in the mud while the earth quakes all around it. You pick up the one of the biggest game in football, the home games for Navy/ND, and a strong global fanbase. Army is a strong football program, and I think Navy could become better if an improved conference. Could allow for a minor or even medium uptick in a renegotiated FB contract.
AF is a bit far geographically ā if we go there we might as well just acquire a bunch of Pac 10 / MWC schools and create a west coast pod. Iām not against that idea and Iāve thought that was our best play a couple weeks ago, but now weād have to pick up a lot of spare parts to make it work.
I think the boat has sailed on WVU. They are not coming in for less money than they are receiving in the Big 12. Navy and Army have loyal fans, but outside of the Army/Navy game what would their addition mean for the conference? They have a pretty hard ceiling as to how good they can be on the field. Donāt get me wrong adding those schools might be the best option left, but I donāt think it moves the needle all that much and is more a bandaid to stop the bleeding.
Best option left is the key phrase. As I said, minimum bump, though I do see long term value.
Itās kinda moot since the ACC aināt gonna do nothing. We should be rooting for FSU to blow things up:
"The likelier scenario has (Big 10) commissioner Tony Petitti looking to the East and the ACC, if the league starts to splinter in the wake of Florida Stateās exit strategy comments this week. North Carolina and Virginia would be primary targets, sources told ESPN. Both are premier public schools and would excite a group of Big Ten presidents and chancellors that still places a premium on ācultural fit.ā Florida State would be more of a stretch, and league sources cautioned against an immediate push. But FSU would give the Big Ten a presence in the Southeast, which former Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany mentioned would be valuable way back in 2010.ā
CBS owns the rights to the Army Navy game so while itās a valuable property, it would come at an additional cost for the ACC. Itās also traditionally been held the week after conference championships so itās a standalone game (boosting value) so that would be tricky too.
I donāt really have anything to add, but I found this chart interesting. Might dive into the database later.
Great tactic until rates moved on em
Can Cal borrow at the discount window?
Cal had to borrow a ton of money to earthquake retrofit Memorial Stadium. Gorgeous place to watch a game, especially when the crowd is sparse. Great view. But built on top of a fault line, so it was retrofit or build a new stadium elsewhere (good luck with that in California) or not have a home stadium.
Reverse repo style
I remember about 10yrs ago Cal threatened to chop their rugby program (which is bama +lsu+mich and name 10 others) and alumni took them to the woodshed. Rugby is actually a rev sport for cal given the donors deep pockets the sponsorships coach clarke has brought in and the fact they bring in 40 plus internationals a yr.
Needless to say the school reversed course. But I donāt think baseball was so lucky
