I suppose that’s fine if his reason is to maintain secrecy of secret scrimmages. I was under the impression though that part of the reason journalists shy away from sharing preseason scores is that they aren’t relevant in exhibitions with sides experimenting with lineups, quitting early because Houston is working them over, etc.
Feels like a letter v. spirit situation…and juxtaposition makes it all feel so much sillier.

I think you may have that backwards. In charity exhibitions the teams are playing close to what they would normally. In secret scrimmages they are playing situations, lots of guys, and things that generally makes scores not as relevant without a lot more information that people can’t see. So he says he doesn’t want to share scores because he doesn’t have that context wherewith exhibitions everyone has that.
Regular exhibitions vs d2 or 3 schools are different. Their scores don’t mean much. But these charity exhibitions are usually against two decent teams so I think the score are just a bit more relevant than the other two options, though obviously still exhibitions

Exactly how did these events come to be called “secret scrimmages”? They aren’t secret; they’re closed scrimmages. Why don’t we call them that? Closed Scrimmages! Thank you for allowing my short rant! Now, you can continue with whatever you’re doing.

I’m sure the NCAA has some arcane rule that somehow forbids it, but it’s a dumb suspension given that the trend over the last several seasons has been towards getting players more pre-draft information before deciding to return to college or not.

Pay article about Daron Holmes, but I found this bit interesting, and is actually more of a recruiting point:
“My trainer, August Mendes, and I, we were looking over film in Arizona while we were working out,” Holmes told The Athletic. “And we were looking at Obi (Toppin)’s team in 2019-20, and the way they played, the style of play. Obviously, Obi played a big factor in it. So we actually reached out to Dayton, Coach (Lynn) Greer talked to the coaching staff, and thankfully they were able to give me an offer.”
Yes, as Holmes tells it, he recruited Dayton, not the other way around. He — a top-50 recruit in the country — actually thought it was a “long shot” when he and his trainer originally called, but at the end of the day, he found his home — a school that has a lot of resources but isn’t necessarily a high-major.
