⛹️‍♂️ Reece Beekman - Official Thread

Rumor has it that Impractical Jokers was filming at a nearby bakery, and I love cakes and pies. So ya never know!

A girl once approached me cold in a grocery store to tell me I looked like one of the guys on Impractical Jokers. Having never seen the show, I had no idea if this was a compliment or she was hitting on my or what. All I got out was an awkward mumble before walking away.

Well, StLouHoo, now you know.

Hah, given my hairline, I’m guessing the guy in the middle (minus glasses). Better than the Dana Carvey / Garth comparisons I got in the 90s, I guess?

There used to be four of them.

I hate to say it, but Reece needs to look in the mirror for why he has never won an NCAAT game.

Couldn’t disagree more. There are plenty of reasons UVA has sucked in the tournament and Reece is very low on that list. No he’s not a do-everything guard who can generate offense from nothing, but how many college PGs are? Even if he were, do you really think CTB would give him the freedom to take low percentage shots? And Reece CAN distribute, but who the hell has he had to distribute to while he was here, especially this season which was the only one where he was the primary PG? Prime Chris Paul wouldn’t win a tourney game in this offense.

So yeah . . . I appreciate the hell out of Reece and I feel sorry for him that he didn’t get all of the success he deserved while at UVA.

On the one hand, sure. On the other hand, he’s 11/35 lifetime in the NCAA tournament, including 0/6 from 3 point range. Sure, maybe he’s a little less of the problem than the guys around him, but not that much less.

7-7 from FT line tonight.

I love Reece as a person and a player. He will be missed tremendously. I hope he gets drafted. He deserves it.

He is a pass-first PG. always was. And he is elite at that. We needed another guard / SF who could knock down shots or create their own too for him.

Go Hoos. Thank you Reece.

Yes to all of this. But why was everyone like “if only Reece had the keys”!! the last few years.

The talent around him clearly wasn’t as good this year. But I think these kind of surface level answers aren’t the silver bullets to our woes.

Either way, going to miss watching him and it sucks to go out this way.

As bad as it ended just think how much worse the season have been if Reece had not returned this year.

Abject humiliation every night. But Eli would have averaged 10 points per game.

Maybe so but if he left after last season and Dante was our starting point guard then we’d have won about 16 games this season so I’ll take the 23 wins and blowout tournament loss

Random thought because I was at JPJ this past weekend and was looking at the retired jerseys:

Will Reece have his jersey retired?

The case for yes:

  • 2x ACC DPOY
  • 2x All-ACC
  • 2x ACC Regular Season Champ
  • 3x All-ACC Defensive team
  • #1 all time at UVA in career steals
  • #3 all time at UVA in career assists
  • big moments: Duke shot, Filipowski block, UMich block

The case for no:

  • lack of postseason success
  • not an All-American
  • avg less than 10 pts/game total over his career

The current retirees:

Retired Numbers
3 -Jeff Lamp, guard
14 -Buzzy Wilkinson, guard
15 - Malcolm Brogdon, guard
20 -Bryant Stith, forward/guard
40 –Barry Parkhill, guard
41 -Wally Walker, forward
44 -Sean Singletary, guard
50 -Ralph Sampson, center

Retired Jerseys
5 -Curtis Staples, guard
44 -Sean Singletary, guard

To me I think there’s a decent argument that his Jersey should be retired, but not his number. To me he has a better case for it than Kihei.

What do you think?

Should Reece’s Jersey be retired?

  • Yes
  • No

I’m going to be honest - I think it’s “no” and I don’t even think it’s particularly close.

This is virtually an impossible question because nobody really knows what the UVA athletics department meant when they explained the criteria for retiring jerseys by saying, “Jersey retirement honors Virginia players who have significantly impacted the program. Individuals recognized in this way will have their jerseys retired, but their number will remain active.”

What’s the criteria, really? Almost good enough for a retired number, but not quite (well, in that case why is Singletary both a retired number and a retired jersey?)? Or does “impact” suspend some of the expectations surrounding number retirement, notably the graduation stipulation, in which case the Big 3 from 2019 would be candidates?

Or does the fact that retired jerseys rarely get mentioned anymore indicate that it was a momentary blip, a mistake of an idea, sort of like that ridiculous football mascot they trotted out in the 1980s?

I appreciate the engagement. I figured the 4 years thing is pretty important.

To me he‘s just as deserving as SS and people are only down on him bc of how the season ended.

Recency bias. Singletary was 3x 1st team All ACC (believe the only other two are Ralph and Stith) and an All American. One of five 2,000 point scorers in program history. Imo at this point he’s become the most overlooked great in UVA basketball history due to the Bennett era success immediately following his era
