šŸ€ The 2024-25 Hoos, Ron Sanchez edition…

Can’t gleam much from these, but guys seem generally upbeat and excited about the upcoming season.

If we start the year really poorly in the first 10 to 14 games, any chance Ron gets fired and replaced with J-Willy? Or does Ron get the entire year no matter what?

I thought about that very thing today but figure it’s highly unlikely.

Agreed. Team would have to totally abandon him for that.

Lol he’s getting the whole year. That would just be spiteful and classless on Carlas part. Williford is not a serious candidate either so there’s no reason to get a look at him.

It would be rewarding Williford for the years he’s given UVA as a player and coach. It’s highly unlikely that the next coach keeps Williford around, so why not reward him with a HC title even if it’s only short lived.

This isn’t tee-ball Williford probably wouldn’t even want that nonsense. This is a silly consideration anyway. Has an interim coach ever been fired in the history of sports?

lol not the double interim. Might as well make it a rotational program. Give every assistant a shot. Give Ron and Willy 8 games each, Soderberg and Vandross 6, Wilkins and KG 4.

Is there a precedent for an interim coach to be fired when they are undefeated?

He hit ā€œspaceā€ with gusto about 1 minute in.

On the new offense:

  • ā€œBall has energyā€ so the goal is to get guys touching the ball often in the flow of the offense.
  • Specific actions mentioned (partly prompted by Luke): Dribble handoffs, slip screens, pass and follow

On the concept of point guards (very nice question by Luke ā€œis there still a point guard after the ball crosses mid courtā€)

  • ā€œWe’re trying to be positionlessā€ - clarifies that he means this offensively only; defense still has positional requirements.
  • ā€œWe are trying to play small on offense while being big on defenseā€

Quick hitters on players (picked by Luke):

  • IMac: Asking him to make more plays for others.
  • Elijah Saunders: Always smiling, loves his optimism
  • TJ Power: I kinda tuned out but I think he was talking about asking him to be versatile on offense.

Possible Ronchez buzzwords to monitor in addition to ā€œspaceā€: ā€œcommunityā€ and ā€œjourneyā€ (used as a verb)

Everyone has the green light to take midrange jumpers.

Difficult to physically get bigger and smaller possession by possession, but I like outside of the box thinking.

Will just add that I liked Ronchez in that 1-on-1 space, he seemed comfortable and had good energy.

It’s quite easy really. We just don’t have our bigs show up on offense. We’ve been doing it for years.

You have to ensure every single possession ends/starts with a dead ball… maybe out of bounds, foul, kick ball, jump ball. Then you can make substitutions every time, get your big defenders in and then immediately swap them out for small scorers. Genius.

ā€œCoach, I’ve noticed every single offensive possession starts with the team intentionally bouncing the ball off an opposing player and out of bounds, and a line-change. That’s intentional, right?ā€

Can we please stop calling him Ronchez? I can’t stand it:
