šŸ€ The 2024-25 Hoos, Ron Sanchez edition…

That’s a good point and worth watching, but to be honest that seemed to be Tony’s philosophy also, so not much change there.

Gone. I already thought we would suck. Now I don’t even know if I can watch. Of course I will watch and I’ll pull for the guys. But it will be pretty challenging to muster my usual hopefulness and optimism. I’m sorry guys. I know you’ve all come to depend on me for that.

Very excited until Coppin State takes us to OT and we lose all the tough games early

I love how everyone forgets so quickly how brutal the 42 pt Colorado State watch was. Just starting a new season, with a new coach and philosophy, after that has to be exciting, no? It’s not like this team is bereft of talent. It’s a high pedigree group with potential.

The last few seasons have been so-so, so I am looking forward to seeing what a new approach looks like (good or bad). But again- this team has talent and should be in the mix for a NCAAT bid (or more), which by itself makes this a year worth getting up for.

What happened to the optimistic board?? lol.

I think I am probably in the minority in having a view like this, but a core part of why I loved the Bennett era so much was how often we won. You could almost always count on him to do more with less and manufacture wins. Yes, we had far too many disappointing march results. Yes, I want to compete at an elite level, for championships. But I also really highly valued the fact that the vast majority of the time I turned on the tv to watch a game, we were going to win (very much unlike the football program) and all that winning adds up over time to a pretty enjoyable (if sometimes frustrating) experience of being a uva basketball fan.

Is this year’s team really more talented than last year’s team? I’m very much in the tbd camp. RD and RB were pretty freaking talented. Now, that team had issues for sure. This team might not have the same issues, but they’re still going to have issues. What this team will definitely lack is a head coach with a long established track record of winning lots and lots of basketball games. I guess we’ll see what continuity is worth.

@HoozGotNext or anyone else - we now have an open slot on the staff, right? what are the immediate plans, if any, with that slot?

Just a guess, but with no time before the season starts I suspect Zay brought to the bench.

Feels like it has to be Zay gets a bump or Soddie gets that spot back after ā€œmovingā€ so they could bring in Kyle right?

I am excited for this upcoming season! While I do appreciate everything Bennett has done for the program I am also really excited for a new beginning. He went out at probably the lowest point the program has been since he came here in my opinion. The post natty years have been rough to watch and I am ready to see new offensive changes!!

In a way, JPJ will be auditioning for a new coach if the Sanchize doesn’t work out. I hope we show out and prove that we’re a home court advantage even without Tony.

TBD, honestly.

I’m most emerging from my pit of despair (only a little backsliding), but I need the Sanchez ā€œhi, I’m the coachā€ presser before I’ll be able to decide how I feel.

All that having been said, I’m going to be on pins and needles a bit for the next 30 days.

If you have them drop them.

Ironically his best team was when he was under sanctions. That title team was full of low end 4 stars

Can you re phrase please

Dropping bags isnt what’s killing the sport. Thats been part of the day since day one. Hell in some ways it was better in the old system because only a few did it and a few were willing to accept.

In this new 1 yr contact world where everyone is a free agent every 9 months. You have every person who can bounce a ball and chew gum not only looking but expecting a level up.

The money has gotten insane, quickly too. This was the first year when it was much of a thing with HS recruits. Like Cam Ward, different people told me Kansas State offered him either 400K or 600K. Who knows what’s true. But a couple years ago, he would have gotten $50K. Nobody wasted their budget on HS recruits other than the very elite guys you expect to make an immediate difference. Now there’s so much money out there, it’s not a worry.

At least before this year, you could compartmentalize it…okay we only need to worry about this craziness during a month or so of transfer season. Then things go back to normal. HS recruiting was still kinda pure. Not at all now, there’s no escape.

I just want to shout myself out. A lot of folks were like ā€œThis is wild, this money will all calm down when rich folks don’t see it work immediatelyā€. Go me (also our sport is dying - hooray!)
