I would assume we’re trying to keep the House $ dry to try and double up next season? I have no idea but weren’t people talking about “tanking” and rolling money over to next seasons? Is that only an issue for football because of their calendar?
Even if it is just football, wouldn’t you want to use that money for football next year if you can have donors front it this year?
I’ve read stuff like that, but I don’t really understand the mechanics of what they’re talking about. Do they mean tanking one sport to help another sport (which I am fairly certain will happen) or do they mean somehow messing with the asynchronicity of when the money is paid out compared to academic years / sports seasons?
I think it’s an issue of how the calendar is situated for football.
But I feel like we could have a one time issue here where players could be prepaid with old NIL and then you can save your House NIL for this coming season. If the calendar rolls over on July 1st, shouldn’t we use our House NIL for this season entirely on next year’s guys since we could pay them outside of that cap until this week?
Good question, and I haven’t been sure if our (estimated) payroll for the 25-26 hoops team includes the House rev share (~$5m or so, I assume) or is only the “old school” NIL.
There is something about which I am unclear. Is there anything in the settlement which prevents athletes from seeking endorsement contracts outside of any agreements with the school?
Nope, but those contracts over $600 have to go through the NIL GO / Deloitte clearinghouse. Basically to make sure they’re not just old school NIL dressed up as an endorsement contract.
I don’t think the pure endorsement part of the market has been as lucrative as may have been expected, but maybe that will grow over the coming years. That report I linked yesterday in a different thread projects more growth in that segment. Based on what, I don’t know.
If you look at the NFL or NBA, how many players are earning any endorsement money? Besides Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, I don’t see football players in commercials for non-football things. Maybe 2-3 players a team might have local commercials for car dealerships? Same with the NBA. LeBron James does commercials, but everyone else I see is doing shoe ads.
So I don’t know what the comparable set of endorsement contracts is unless they’re building up the database with these new ones and all you’re doing is comparing them against each other.
On the other hand, alumni/boosters may be more motivated to make lucrative offers to college players than unaffiliated business owners who might be considering NBA/NFL players. While the latter group would probably consider the expenditure in strictly business terms, the former group’s reasons might be a bit more complex. Who knows how negotiations with agents will evolve in the new environment? For instance, will schools provide players’ agents with a list of alumni business owners likely to use the NIL in their advertising? And, then, who determines the market value? This is going to get interesting.
He’s a nice complement to Tillis. Big question for me is our rebounding and defense at the 4 spot. De Ridder seems more finessy and perimeter oriented. Tillis is undersized (although posted a nice 21% DReb rate).
We can run the offense through Grünloh and De Ridder as they’re both great in the pick and roll, and more than capable 3 point shooters. Grünloh can rim run, and then De Ridder can - and to me this really sets him apart - can pick and pop, or drive to the hoop off the bounce with a little pump fake.
The front court will open up so much for our guards and now after reading Cuts piece on Hall, I’m thinking he’s kinda the perfect PG for this roster. He’s going to have no shortage of space and passing options
Agreed. We’re going to be really strong offensively.
Conversely, think we’re going to struggle against other high level offenses with traditional big men. My mind goes to that Louisville - Creighton first round matchup, where eventually you can’t boat race the other team.
Should be a lot of fun. And I like our athleticism way more than last year’s Louisville team.
Curious to know what’s actually changed, status-wise, if anything. Or if this is us or his camp trying to create a bit of momentum. Not sure why that’d be helpful, but I’m really not familiar with the NCAA eligibility process or the visa process.
But there are so few teams with true, stud 5s anymore. Plus, I think that is where Ugo gets big mins and we can hold our own fine. It of course is going to take a min but I actually think our frontcourt will eventually be ok defensively and more than ok on the boards.
Yeah we’ll be nasty. My only hesitation is that usually a collection of high talent coming together doesn’t produce individually the same level. Confidence can take a hit for some guys. Or their new role isn’t the same as it was when they produced.
I’d put Hall, Thomas, Grünloh in my top 3 to meet expectations. Tillis, White, De Ridder, and Lewis I have more questions about their transition. Onyenso I’m not expecting much, a Cafarro type role, so won’t be hard to live up to.
That said, we are so deep that you just need a few guys to hit and the rest to get comfortable with a non-feature role.
