Truthfully so long that it was pretty much scrapped. I don’t really write the commitment articles in advance. Doesn’t take but a few minutes. @JoeBoxley does a scholarship chart and I throw it into a barebones format and fill in the blah after it’s announced.

The interesting part of this…I knew De Ridder had signed because UVA would have had to pay his contract buyout and they couldn’t do that until he was clear. Yet the NCAA still isn’t finished deciding on how many years he’ll have. Which I think is where we’ve been for at least two weeks.

Glad he is aboard! We have a really balanced/gifted offensive team. WE shall see on defense/intangibles/rebounding etc.

Couple of interesting items I’ll be watching for.
- Reluctant passer at times passing only after getting stuck…. He will have a ton of scorers around him so he shouldn’t play like a black hole - be aggressive but a willing passer… I know Tillis will pass well so may be not a big thing.
- How he defends in space and rebounds vs similar size guys.
Odom wants his guys to crash offensive boards… which bigs can do that consistently?
Gertrude may be best on team? Prolly Onyenso too.

My only concern is that our Europeans won’t be practicing together until late July. That’s a lot of lost time for a team that is already unfamiliar with each other. Their pro experience makes them more mature and likely to handle the rapid adjustment better than an 18 year old freshman, but still

His body type, athleticism and size and offensive skill is actually reminiscent of Gill… but low chance to be that efficient… unless he shoots 38% or better from 3 since Gill wasn’t allowed to shoot threes at UVA even though he was a career 42% 3 point shooter in college.
Also Gill had the benefit of a red shirt year to get acclimated

Don’t disagree with the physical traits but I’d be shocked to see TDR bang inside like Gill, which was by far his most valuable trait

Of past Odom guys, I had been thinking Taylor Funk (outside-in Utah St PF) with some Jack Clark-like qualities in transition (he likes to attack in the open court).

Certainly seems best case is he blows up this year and it a solid draft pick. Then this creates an image that we are a factory to translate international players to the NBA and we get 1/2 of these a year.

He will not be eligible for the draft next year or any year. NBA put out guidance last week that any players who were auto eligible this year (even if they now go to college or asked to be withdrawn) were in this years draft and are now considered undrafted free agents.
