⛹️‍♂️ Thijs De Ridder Recruiting Thread

Don’t think so. There’s been no mention of that regarding him and he’s not on any draft big board.

I’m not sure how it works but I saw someone mention that if the NCAA denies him eligibility, then that would make him an automatic draft entry and it’s not that improbable he’d get picked.

Right now, he’s considered an international since he was born overseas and has lived overseas for at least the last 3 years and has never enrolled at a US college. So as a 22 year old international, he’s automatically in the draft and if he doesn’t get drafted, he’s free to sign with any team at any time.

But if he enrolls in a US college anytime before the draft, he’s no longer an international and once he’s considered a domestic player, he’s automatically in the draft after his eligibility runs out. Anytime before then, he’d have to declare himself as an early entrant.

The draft is June 25. So the question would be what happens if he doesn’t enroll by June 25 and isn’t drafted. Is he a free agent who can sign with any team at any time even after he enrolls in college, even mid-season? The only way he can enroll before June 25 is if he can be admitted by Summer session II, which starts June 16. Session III starts July 14. Can he possibly get all his paperwork done and get his visa in the next 2 weeks, especially if the embassies aren’t scheduling new visa interviews right now?

Or alternatively, does enrolling in school after he’s automatically eligible reset his status such that he would be eligible to be drafted again even though he already went through a draft cycle without getting drafted.

I’m pretty sure that the NBAPA would be opposed to forcing someone to be subject to the draft multiple times. They’d rather their potential membership be a free agent who could sign for as much as they deserve. And I think that’s how I read the CBA as well.

So given that, maybe the holdup is because the NCAA is asking the NBA for guidance on their rules because the NCAA doesn’t want to grant eligibility to a person who is free to sign with an NBA team at any time.

This is probably the closest Euro signing to fitting with De Ridder’s profile. He had committed back in February. Probably hasn’t quite earned as much as De Ridder but he’s a 21 year old who’s done really well playing full time in the German top division for a few years.

This guy has officially signed with Oklahoma State (Cowboy Basketball lands sharp-shooting Greek forward - Oklahoma State University Athletics), and I think he’s also close to De Ridder’s profile too, having logged a ton of full first division seasons in Greece and even three full Euroleague seasons with Panathinaikos:
Lefteris Mantzoukas, Basketball Player, Stats, Height, Age | Proballers

Ok St lists him as freshman, which seems insane to me (he has 8 senior-level seasons, lmao)

Maybe this guy is a De Ridder comparison too if the random mentions of KU and Auburn interest are real; 3 full seasons in the French top division:
Brice Dessert, Basketball Player, Stats, Height, Age | Proballers

Starting to wonder if De Ridder will actually get cleared to play at UVA. I heard different things, that he is awaiting approval from NCAA approval and UVA admissions. Doesn’t summer practices start this week or next week or something? I think he would fill a hole in the 4 spot where our current guys either lack experience (Barksdale) or physical tools (Tillis). It’ll be nice to have a 4 man with both rather than facing a tradeoff between the two.

Nice. Crossing my fingers. That’s a good sign that there’s still a chance.

They start June 16

Think you mentioned this in another thread - but think we’re on the same page.

After 6 months of bitching about the state of college sports, the transfer portal, & NIL….somehow I look at this collection of 1-year randos and think “Ok, I’m ready to get hurt again. LET’S EFFING GO”

As soon as I saw Malik at JPJ in UVA gear, it started to feel more normal. Think it will be an easier transition for fans than we assumed, even if it still feels different when they take the floor in November.

Yeah as Jerry Seinfeld put it, at the end of the day, we’re largely just rooting for laundry.
