UVA Basketball 2022-2023 Post Mortem Thread/Transfer out thread

First of all, I’m making a suggestion, not a claim. None of the options provided directly referenced coaching - be it pre-game prep, in game adjustments, or any active culpability with the coaching staff.

Yes, that is obvious. I think just about everyone agrees with that. However I think winning a championship carries a hell of a lot more weight than you seem to think.

I do find the argument of “If we didn’t win the national title, things would be way worse” to be pretty funny. Like yeah, no shit lol…

We do have a problem with first round games, and it’s something Tony needs to fix going forward. But if Tony helped us win a ship once he can do it again, trying to discredit that title win for the sake of a narrative does nothing.

I think it carries a lot of weight. And since then, in the 3 tournaments, we lost in the first round twice and missed the other entirely. What is the statute of limitations here for 2019? And lost in the first the year before. It’s been almost 5 years. Are we allowed to talk about how shitty of a coach he is in March yet (evidently)? I hope there are staff changes this off season. Go for it. I think the future looks bright.

Curious, what staff changes you think would be good?

Bring back Kyle Getter?

Fair enough. I probably read into your post more than I should have.

Bring in Darris Nichols or [realistically] another offensive-minded assistant that can supplement and complement the staff and provide new perspectives. He’s from Virginia too.

Got it. Thank you

Question – Did Furman use the zone before? If so, did the team prepare for this during practice? I would assume that we would have practiced against press/zone/etc. and the team should be prepared for a switch by the other team. But then when we are caught flat-footed, I wonder if we aren’t preparing them and/or reminding them to be ready for a switch. Or is just hard to adjust in the moment? If so, I then wonder why we don’t pull such a trick out of our hat. Imagine if as soon as they went with the 1-3-1, we did something totally unexpected.

This guy? You must not be from around here.

I thought the offensive coaching wasn’t really a problem this year. We had basically zero shot creators and very streaky shooters. Better talent will maximize that (see Traudt taking the shots BVP got). My bigger issue is failure (or lateness) to adjust. Some of that is again on personnel but it’s been a problem with Tony his whole career and has been exacerbated in March (see Furman zone)

Apparently Furman hadn’t used the 1-3-1 zone in months and we had no tape on it. Having said that, we’ve seen that same 1-3-1 at least once a year for the past seven years whenever we play GT.

Yes that guy. A guy who is known in CBB circles as being a good offensive mind, who cut his teeth at a power program like Florida before getting his own shot (and yes, apparently making a stupid mistake - I wasn’t aware of that). Someone like him is my point. Who comes from a different pedigree. Doubt someone would leave a HC gig but anyway, someone with that profile, less the DUI…

And I suspect CTB is aware of this. I mean. The team attempted 24 3s, combined, in our last 2 first round games. He’s trying to steer the ship around the problem, it just didn’t work out this time.

My translation of “the team just has trouble putting away weaker teams” means “the team gets up for the big games but overall might not be that great”.

Which, the last couple seasons, feels fair.

Good insight from @Haney. I want to go back and watch a Las Vegas game vs. Thursday. If my memory is correct, we ran faster up the court and seemed to play freer. Tony plays a cerebral brand of basketball (I tend to think of this as good) – by the end of the year, they walk the ball up the court (could be exhausted and if so, a different issue) and when watching them, they look to me like they are thinking a lot. Does tightness come from being in your head? Or nerves?

Any thoughts on how Shedrick pulls out the game he did on Thursday and yet played so few minutes over the past couple of months? Watching his time go down - and yet, he had the ability to do what he did on Thursday. This goes back to adjustments. It’s not just in-game, but coaching has to adjust to get the most out of each player. I continue to be completely perplexed by how we were unable to get that out of Shedrick until Thursday.
