UVA Basketball December 2023

I think 9-2 was probably a win above where I thought we’d be. The 2 blowout losses have been awful to watch but the truth is that we played very experienced teams. In contrast our rotation consists of 2 seniors, 3 sophomores (1 adjusting to this level of basketball, 1 who played sparingly last season), and 3 freshmen. Not surprisingly the 2 seniors had decent games last night and everyone else was overwhelmed. I have no doubt that this team will get better and we have a good opportunity with the schedule coming up.
Also, I think that Memphis team is very good. they’ve been battle tested so far this year and I would be pretty shocked if they aren’t top 15 by years end.

I think Isaac has said himself that his confidence is heavily impacted by whether he makes a shot early on, or something like that. Reminds of Woldo a little bit

Random question but want to make sure I’m not going crazy. Were Jerome and Huff seriously top 50 recruits?? Don’t remember either being this high on 247

Ty’s rating jumped up in the summer of 2015 (after he had committed):

I was hopeful for 11-2 going into 2024, which is where we “should” be barring a big upset.

Anything worse than 10-3 would have had me concerned.

Ft. Meyers and the last 2 games are concerning, but we’ve got a lot of young guys in key roles. Hopefully we’ll start to see more consistency in ACC play.

In case you’re wondering about why Huff was - here’s his very first game at UVA.

I remember he was a good prospect lol. I just thought it was like 70th ish.

This was in no way shape or form intended to open up a Jay Huff PT debate

For dribble and shoot guys, I agree. They have to beat their man (or the double) to get their shots. But for catch and shoot, there are countless ways that teams can use to get guys open. It just takes commitment from all parties - screeners, runners, and passers. We have it from none of the parties today with Isaac. And we are generating no open looks as a result.

Have said before. Jay is perfect guy for USA basketball team competitions

Regardless of the score last night, I think I am well pleased with the improvements we’re seeing from Leon Bond III. On fast breaks, he appears to get the “yips” occasionally (mishandling the ball), but I am hopeful that, with experience, those issues will disappear. I think his developmental curve is shaping up nicely. He’s going to be good, IMO.

Yeah we haven’t had that kind of talent recruited to our team in a while. I mean do we have anybody on our team currently that flashes what Huffzingis flashed in his first game?

Jay was a bit unique in that he single-handedly expanded what the team could do offensively.

But also, we had our all-time KenPom era (back to 1997) stinker offense when he was a major contributor, so it’s not like any one guy can be a panacea when the the offense is rough. Unless you’re David Jones in Fall of 2023 or Carsen Edwards in March of 2019.

Two things I’ve learned over the past couple of years:

  1. It is never as bad as LRA makes it seem.
  2. It is never as good as LRA makes it seem.

Recall Beekman’s advice to Gertrude: “I just told him there’s always gonna be highs and lows throughout the season and to never get too high. Never get too low, too, just stay with a level head."

And this is the rational UVa fan site

Just showing you why the young Huff was a sought after recruit

Very few people ever saw Huff play in HS. Jerry Meyer, head 247 dude at the time, saw him at a Phenom Hoops Showcase event the fall of his junior year and immediately moved him up to Top 50 ranked. No offers, no one knew who he was. That’s why I loved Jerry. Nobody who does this stuff today would trust their own eyes like that.

Corey Evans, who did his own rankings for HoopSeen at the time, later ranked Jay in his top 25. This was a year after long after committed. When Corey does that, it drags others along.

I remember Eric Bossi, who was the Rivals guy then, admitted after doing his final rankings update that he threw Jay in (around 50th?) despite never seeing him play because he knew it would look foolish not to have him included. I respected Bossi for admitting that, most would not.

I don’t mean this in a bad way, but he’s not at all what I expected. I thought a smaller Trey Murphy, but he seems more like Akil or Atkins.

Not at all what was expected, but I’ll take it nonetheless.

“As a player, Dunn’s most promising strength is his shooting ability. He has a pure stroke and a quick release as he can hit off of catch-and-shoots or dribble pull ups.”

You weren’t misremembering, @norfolk_hoo.

Like 44% from 3 or something his last aau summer. Even Jamie Shaw went out and saw Dunn play and said his shooting was his strength.

The growth spurt screwed the shot up. He needs to spend a summer with Klay Thompson, Joe Harris, Sam Hauser, and Trey Murphy working on the form

But it was mostly no longer true once he was at Perkiomen that school year. And seemed to get progressively less true … which seems to give credence to a continuing growth spurt / body adjustment thing, but :man_shrugging:
