Hoos tied for 41st with Clemson in latest AP poll.
27th in Coaches Poll
Felt like we did that with Dre though. Am I wrong?
Should immediately use Dunn to set a ball screen for Rohde or Isaac and get easy looks on the drop coverage
Yeah I really donât love it. But I also think Tony Bennett is great because he does things his way, so Iâll take the few negatives(in my book) to get all of the positive.
Positives: Basically everything
Negatives: I donât love our base set on offense and donât like our uniforms.
So do the positives outweigh the negatives? Yes. Will I stop complaining about the negatives though? Probably not:)
Personally I am a Blocker-Lover and I donât get why people place so much blame at its feet. It has historically generated tons of great shots and our offense really only truly sucked when we didnât have the shooters to make the shots. But whatever I donât care what scheme we use.
yeah Iâm sort of in that camp too @WFS_HOO . Itâs not that I donât think it matters, itâs that college coaching staffs are all really good at figuring it all out so the difference is negligible. But thatâs more by the end of the season, and this is November. I also think itâs generally a very boring topic to 90% of fans so I rarely touch on it.
There will be schematic adjustments as the season goes on because there always are, thatâs what coaches do. That was my main point. The time to get concerned is when they go away from blocker-mover and then come back because they canât find answersâŚlike what happened a couple years ago.
Because even when it is working the most common shot it creates is 2 point jumpers. Doesnât utilize the bigs. It also doesnât generate many free throw attempts. And when itâs not working it gets straight up ugly. It ainât really complicated lol it works when you have a Ty Jerome or Malcolm Brogdon type but otherwise itâs suboptimal
Not to say I think B/M is the worst option in general (might be for this team if IMac and Rohde canât start getting off more shots). Just had hoped we would see more of Bo Ryanâs or Jay Wrightâs offensive influence this far into Tonyâs tenure
Mover blocker fits players like Joe Harris and Kyle guy and Jerome and Perrantes, and even Brogdon and Hall some.
I just hate it when like with 3 minutes left out of nowhere Reece will effortlessly drive to the Rim like itâs nothing when the urgency kicks in and Im sitting there like âWHY HAVENT YOU BEEN DOING THAT THE WHOLE GAMEâ. Also the passiveness it teaches can be detrimental to a roster that is already lacking âdawgâ mentality.
That and itâs pretty funny to watch teams guard mover blocker this year. Like you can clearly tell in that set the other team doesnât give a flyin F about anyone but following mcKneely and pressuring him off the screen.
Good point. Mentally exhausting too. Poor Rohde looked like a straggler at the end of a Iron Man vs. Wisky. He was cooked.
For all my fellow early 90s SNL heads:
Bobby Wheat: âAirplanesâ for $200: âAnd what is the Deal With the Black Box?â [ Tommy buzzes in ] Tommy!
Tommy: Itâs the only thing that survives the crash â why donât they build the whole plane out of the Black Box!
It does seem like there should be designed plays for Reece that are akin to the isolation play that the 2019 team used to call for Dre:
Jay Wrightâs offense is kinda diametrically opposite B/M; Nova typically sacrifices player movement to preserve spacing, and sometimes they sacrifice ball movement too (like the zero pass possessions people were talking about recently where they had Justin Moore dribble into a post-up with a cleared out side of the floor). If you have good ways to create an initial advantage at the point of attack, that spacing leads to bad options for the defense rotating, but if you canât win the point of attack, it can get ugly and stagnant (true for like 99% of offenses, not specific to Novaâs).
Bo Ryanâs classic Swing offense is another patterned offense that plays through the post. Iâve never been a huge fan of it because it leads to a lot of guard post-ups, which can be nice in certain doses when they have mismatches, but maybe not a shot type you want in high doses.
I understand it would be a big shift but those two had better offenses than Tony. I think Tony is tied to B/M because itâs weirdly part of his identity rather than because he objectively analyzes things and thinks itâs the best base offense. Even Dick Bennett said he created B/M because it was tough to recruit skilled bigs to small schools not because he thinks itâs the best offense
Itâs not like the rest of the coaching community endorses it by running it themselves like they do with the packline. I mean did Sanchez even run B/M at Charlotte? McKay doesnât run it at as his primary offense at Liberty
14. New Orleans Pelicans: Ryan Dunn

- School/Team: Virginia
- Position: SF/PF
- Age: 20, Sophomore
- Size: 6â8", 216 lbs
- Pro Comparison: Herb Jones
At some point in this yearâs first round, a team is going to look past Ryan Dunnâs offensive limitations to add his wild defensive playmaking and court coverage.
Certain front offices will feel they can afford to pass on better scorers and playmakers if a Herb Jones 2.0 is available.
Not many 6â8" forwards anticipate and move with as much speed and explosion as Dunn, whoâs made some incredible recovery plays, jumps passing lanes and rotates down for weakside contests at the rim.
An off-ball disruptor with the size and foot speed to guard bigs or wings, he can also provide complementary scoring with elite athleticism for play-finishing.
Any signs of shooting improvement this year should launch him into one of the draftâs top tiers.
Serious question: better predictive value this stage of the season, average mock draft blogger/tweeter or average AP poll voter? I donât follow the nba at all so I really have no context.
Forgot Reece
52. Orlando Magic: Reece Beekman

- Position: PG
- Age: 22, Senior
- Size: 6â3", 194 lbs
Moving up draft boards will require Reece Beekman to show some shooting improvement. Heâs still an interesting second-round option for his two-way playmaking. Some teams could find use for his passing IQ to run offense and pesky defense around the perimeter.
Heâll really help himself by looking more confident with his pull-up and three-ball. Right now, itâs difficult to picture him self-creating or scoring at the next level, which is a potential issue in todayâs NBA for a lead guard.
I donât know much about the guys who do the mocks honestly. I think this guy puts them out fairly regularly. Was just sharing.
Not sure Ryanâs best fit would be New Orleans. Already have a good wing defender who isnât a scorer, with Herb Jones. Their biggest need is a reserve big man.
