Swimmers can keep prize money?

x.com

This used to be a (really stupid) issue with college tennis players when they would get into major tournaments and win some money.

Gretchen keeps making her case for the best short-course swimmer ever - yards or meters.

She will only get better and learn to finish stronger in long-course over the next few years leading up to LA 2028, too.

She loses some of her underwater advantage, but given what we’ve heard from her, she’ll be determined to overcome that.

The training partnership with Douglass, Alex and Curzan has to be incredible.

And I really hope Curzan can get her shot again, too.

F is short course?

25m pool instead of 50m. College competes in 25m, Olympics are 50m pool.

Ah got it and thank you

college racing is primarily 25 yard pools, but a lot of pools in the US are also 25 meters.

It’s raced less, and most international-level meets are 50-meter pools.

International swimmers love to criticize US colleges for swimming in the ā€œbathtubā€.
Until they get their ass kicked by Walsh and Douglass.

Kind of.

They can keep their expenses. The rest gets funneled through USA Swimming, and back to the athlete in ways allowed by the NCAA.

Gretchen better book herself business class on the way home them. Maybe go the other direction and connect through Tokyo, for expense reasons.

They’re holding the 2028 LA Olympics swimming events at SoFi Stadium, where the Rams and Chargers play. I’m sure we could use Scott for better purposes than football. Or JPJ. Kidding, not kidding?

Those with the deepest pockets get to keep their stadium

The James River is free. Or better yet I have a nice 1/4 mile stretch I’d been willing to lend for a price

Gretchen Walsh made more in seven days in Budapest than any of our current football players will make next year in the NFL (they won’t make a dime; Walsh garnered about $300K).

Sanker’s gonna get drafted. 300k is the signing bonus of a mid 5th round pick. Minimum salary is just short of a mil.

But then again, none of that is guaranteed. If a guy can make 500k+ for an extra year in college, I’d absolutely sign up for that over uncertain draft prospects and potentially getting cut at any time.

To each their own, but I don’t understand the rejection of a gold-standard UVa program. I think we should celebrate all of them…even the non-revs…when they deserve it.

I’m hopeful we can turn a corner in revenue sports, but that ain’t a game we’ve demonstrated we know how to play yet. For now, we’re a swimming, baseball, lax, and tennis school.

It was nice to be a basketball school for a while. Hope we get back there. Jury’s out of football until we see how our Hessians do vs everyone else’s.

Good point

It is becoming a funny thing right? If I were being devils advocate I would say ā€œgreat. Swimmers take Virginia resources etc and be great and all but they dont really give anything back the the Universityā€ perse.

I saw the ā€œdual meetā€ was sold out etc So whats that? 2000 people there (I dont know).

I totally know what you mean but end of the day what does having a swimming dynasty for UVa really mean? For the actual swimmers even that just need a pool
